Character Actor

Simon Scott (September 21, 1920 – December 11, 1991)  Character actor from Monterey Park, California. He was best known for his role as Arnold Slocum on Trapper John M.D. and as General Bronson on McHale's Navy.

Scott starred in the early episodes of Markham as John Riggs, the title character's sidekick. However the character of Riggs was dropped after only 8 episodes. Scott made five guest appearances on Perry Mason, including the role of murderer Stanley Overton in one of the series' final episodes in 1966 titled "The Case of the Positive Negative". He also appeared on dozens of other TV series, making numerous appearances each on series including 77 Sunset Strip, Bonanza, The F.B.I., 1973 Cannon, The Invaders, and Ironside. Scott also played in Barnaby Jones, in an episode titled “Trap Play”(01/07/1975).

Scott also had a recurring role as Chief Metcalf on the ABC series The Mod Squad. In addition he also guest starred on series including The Munsters, The Fugitive, Mannix and most notably the 1960 The Twilight Zone episode "The Last Flight"  (Wikipedia)

Started really watching Trapper John M.D.

I checked out the pilot AGES ago when I did my W*A*L*T*E*R review in 2014 and I enjoyed it but now I’m trying to go through the entire series because I’ve run out of new M*A*S*H related material outside the novels to check out. And I’m really liking it. It’s nothing like M*A*S*H but it’s a fantastic medical dramedy. It’s more like they took the premise of M*A*S*H and transitioned it to a stateside hospital, since Trapper is more like the Col. Potter of the hospital, reining in the Hawkeye/Trapper of Gonzo (and to a lesser extent Jackpot, since I’ve only seen him clash with patients and Riverside), the Frank Burns of Dr. Riverside, and the two nurses Gloria (Ripples, an undignified nickname) and Starch (and later a different nurse but I’m still in Season 1) acting as the Margaret. Not the same in tone, but the character archetypes are very similar.

I have a hard time seeing Pernell Roberts as the same Trapper John as Wayne Rogers or Elliot Gould were, but I can’t deny how good it is and what a shame it is that it’s never been released on home video. I know why the other two spin-offs weren’t, but I’m shocked that the good one is also stuck in limbo.

I know the characters have different names and Trapper John M.D. isn’t even the same universe, but I swear to you that Lieutenant Nelson from Season 3′s Payday is what I imagine that Nurse Starch from Trapper John M.D. was like when she served with Trapper in Korea. Same snark and she even kinda looks similar to Mary McCarty. It’s weird that even when the shows diverged so greatly that I can find parallels.
