I find it very interesting how "Across The Sea" by Weezer is seen as a love song, especially on tiktok. I see edits and animations of the song, and just laugh a little. Not because the videos are poorly made, in fact I love seeing them. But you can clearly tell that there's a disregard for the meaning of the song. I mean, if you were to listen to the song and not just a clip popular online, I think you'd understand. The first line is literally "You are eighteen year old girl". Which makes the lines "I wonder what clothes you wear to school" and "I wonder how you decorate your room" a little bit more sinister when understanding the full context. Especially considering the next line after that is "I wonder how you touch yourself". It's not a love song, it's a song about a 25-26 year old guy (Rivers Cuomo) obsessing over an 18 year old Japanese girl he's never met.

It makes me start to wonder. How many degrees of separation is someone willing to apply before it becomes something completely different? Personally I think this song and its meaning should be taken for what it is, a song about desperation. Making it a love song or giving it a romantic connotation destroys the intentions of the artist and the purpose of the lyrics.

Not to mention romanticizing the song and its lyrics is just kind of gross if you understand the full context of it because like come on. 😭
