ＴＲＡＶＩＳ ＨＩＣＫＭＡＮ －
If anyone had told Travis Hickman that at twenty-seven years old, he’d be a freshman in college, he wouldn’t have thought very much of it–he probably would have brushed it off with a laugh. Raised by a single parent, his nuclear scientist of a mother held very high expectations for the boy and throughout his childhood, he was always the most ambitious person in his class. This didn’t change as he grew and all throughout high school, he made his mother proud. His GPA was stellar, he was accepted to every college he applied for, and despite the fact he had a hard time carrying friendships to the end of his high school career, his future seemed bright. If only he could decide on a major.
It started simply with Psychology, but the myriad of course choices that Travis was offered at Caligo Bay University, his college of choice, was unbelievable. There was so much to learn, so much knowledge to put in the metaphorical bank that he was longing to fill to the brim. Everything he did, he did to impress his mother and despite her constant praise, he never felt it was enough. There was more he could do. More he could learn. Four years of college just wasn’t enough for Travis. His University education began in the December after his seventeenth birthday, the credits he’d accumulated during high school enough to help him graduate early–and then some. When he received his first degree, he was filled with a prideful feeling that he wished to keep replicating. So he skipped the career path for now, waved away graduate school and started from the beginning, going for his Bachelor’s of Arts with his Bachelor’s of Science in his hand.
Choosing school again over the workforce was a difficult decision and he knew his debt was piling up, but Travis couldn’t bring himself to leave college. He was learning so much and the campus lifestyle was intoxicating…Even if he didn’t experience much of it. Aside from his brains, a major part of who he was included his aversion to confrontation, which often kept him from interacting with other people at all. Part of the reason he chose college again in the first place was his hopeful assumption that a second time around would make him more eager to befriend the other students on campus, but he still can’t find the courage in himself to strike up conversation when he has a chance to.
