Travis Louie's "Magical Beasts."
Currently on view at KP Projects in Los Angeles, California is artist Travis Louie's outstanding solo exhibition, "Magical Beasts."
Driven by a fascination and respect for animals and characters from all walks of life, Louie finds inspiration in the imagination and the artistic process of manifested storytelling in painted form. Gothic writer Edgar Allen Poe described it as a way to destabilize the boundary between the internal working of the mind and reality.
Strange creatures and mythical beasts appear in Louie’s paintings as dignified beings with magical attributes. A Tree frog preaches from the top hat of a white mustached toad that was once a man, Miss Lilly wears a bird hat from High Street that keeps her warm during the Winter months, and Harry the Moth spends most of his time simply observing us. As with past series of work, Louie plays with emotive expressions to make animals and creatures share greater attributes with their human counterparts. Although Louie’s aesthetic may affectionately borrow from the past, much of the inspiration for his thematic content is rooted within observations from the present.
“All artists are a reflection of the time they live in, regardless of what kind of work they do," Travis explains. "We are like filters that absorb sensory information and when we make our art, those are the things that adhere to our psyche, our aesthetic…”

Haven Gallery presents 'Imaginary Friends', a solo art exhibition of works by Travis Louie, featuring portraits from an alternative universe, an imaginary world that is grounded in Victorian and Edwardian times, that seemingly may or may not have existed.
The opening reception is Friday May 12 from 6-8pm ET, with Travis also in attendance. The exhibition is on display until June 4 2023 at Haven Gallery, 50 Main St, Northport, NY 11768, open to the public by appointment only for viewing the art safely with Covid precautions, and on the Haven Gallery website.
