Birch lane in Swedish Lappland
Kilian stopped the car when he saw the golden light.

There is a spruce tree outside my window. It is taller than the house, and shades my room in the afternoon. It has been here for thirty years, if not longer. Sometimes I see birds and squirrels on its branches.
There is a man in the neighborhood who pats the tree every time he passes it. He is older, judging by the ring of gray hair around his bald head. I don't know his name, but I know he lives in a blue and gray house on a nearby street. I've seen him walk by almost every afternoon for over a year.
Is he taking to the tree? Sometimes he's muttering to himself but it doesn't seem to be directed at the tree. I wonder if the tree talks to him. Maybe be doesn't understand its language or what it wants, except that he feels the need to pat it. If I can speak and think and, apparently, feel, why not this enormous thing that is obviously alive?
Seeing this man pat the tree gives me a better appreciation for different ways of understanding time. Perhaps each pat helps reassure the tree of its continued existence to others, no matter the season.
Happy Fall, y’all. 🍁

Alcune amicizie sono come gli abeti, sempre verdi; altre invece risultano essere come le rose, sfioriscono.
