The Temporary Protected Status program was created by Congress to allow humanitarian protection for those fleeing unsafe countries. (Haiti has seen ongoing gang violence.) The law gives specific procedures that the president must follow to legally rescind TPS status; Trump did not follow those procedures; and today, the Supreme Court ruled that the judiciary could not review that defect.
This decision to withdraw legal status from hundreds of thousands of Hatian immigrants — virtually all of whom came here legally — stands as part of the Trump administration's wider racial project of restricting immigration to White people. (The asylum program has been reduced to — literally — only allowing White South Africans.)
