Lip Gloss (To a Friend)
At the bottom of my purse are the lips of a girl who I thought would last.
At the bottom of my purse are the lips of a girl who I thought would last. Best friends! It was fast; she was suddenly in every class I was taking, and we did everything together: food + drinks + movies + groceries + class + work + gossip. I bought that lip gloss (red strawberry) while she browsed mascara.
She spilled her soul to me in a university stairwell, and I knew I was in too deep. She told me of ex-boyfriends and grooming coaches and distant fathers and virginity. I nodded along, lips red and sticky.
I never gave anything but affirmations, but advice, but my lip gloss in the bottom of my purse. She knew it was hers; she did not ask permission, only where it was.
We watched Twilight and drank strawberry wine. We spent the day in the book store. We slipped from class early for a bagel. We waited for each other outside of classes. We spent nights doing laundry at each other’s apartments. We video-called to show each other our pets, our outfits, our physics homework. We shared perfume and deodorant and shoes and drinks and nicotine and lip gloss.
I have never been treated to the intimacy of the girls’ bathroom, girls’ sleep over, girls’ secrets, always outside, always adverse to the girlhood universals that instead beat me down in high school locker rooms and dugouts. Girlhood had called me a man, an animal, a cow, a snitch. I never was girly enough for Twilight and cheap wine and pink perfume and red strawberry lip gloss, but she clipped herself to my bag like a charm. Pink glitter. Red gloss.
The day before my birthday, she begged me to go to someone else’s party. She called me 10 times when I didn’t pick up, when I was hanging out with my old friends. She told me to leave them for her.
On my birthday, I buy the supplies and I come over to pop music and jello shots and fast food fried chicken, and it’s all her favorites, not mine. And I try to begrateful when she takes my camera away from me, but I hate pop music and I hate jello shots and I hate wings and I HATE throwing up in her bathroom at 3 AM realizing I have been nothing but something to fill space and time and dead air. I am there to make her old friend with a new boyfriend jealous, to be the drunk girl at the party to parade about like a freak, to be something new and strange for conversation, to get the easy A, to always source red lip gloss.
We become strangers again as suddenly as friends. Graduation was the end of everything. I do not throw it away. It is just lip gloss, hers and mine.
