so ive recently stopped buying things (only buying essentials like food and hygiene products) and i enjoy hearing about other people's no buys as well, but something that really bothers me is how many people practicing a no buy end up with the "you're broke bc avocado toast" mindset and see themselves as morally superior for having a little extra money because they dont buy 10 body sprays or whatever and that totally misses the point. these people are often very well off already too, and can decide to stop their no buy at any time with no financial repercussions.
which is entirely missing the point, or at least what i presumed the point of a no buy is. i started a no buy because i realized the bottomless well of want within me was making me feel like i was drowning in possessions. i realized that i feel so much better on vacation or spending the night at someone else's house because everything i have at the moment fits in one or two overnight bags. so ive made it a point to just. stop buying things. work through the things i own so as not to waste anything, and then only buy what i need.
another factor thats just as important is im tired of throwing money at all the corporations and people who are responsible for the marketing in the first place that created that bottomless well of want within my soul. its all on purpose because thats just the nature of capitalism. keep people from ever, ever feeling any sense of contentment. keep them wanting and feeling like they're missing something no matter what. and thats another, but just as important factor in my no buy. because fuck those people they dont get shit from me no more.
which is why the people talking about their no buy with a sense of superiority gross me out so much. they're on a no buy because they want to hoard as much money as possible. they're on a no buy because they want to look down on others with a sense of "eeewwww you're poor because you like buying things!" without looking at the larger framework of how we're all conditioned to buy buy buy all the time and none of us are immune to propaganda.
i could also go into how the "ur broke bc avocado toast" argument is bullshit because, by design, being poor is extremely fucking expensive. they tell you you're responsible for your own financial hardships because you eat takeout instead of cooking, while ignoring that takeout is cheaper than finding someone to fix your stove, your microwave, or what else you have to prepare food that isn't working because everything is made to break. and then because all you can afford to survive is takeout, you might end up with health issues depending on how your body responds to lower cost foods over a long period of time. and then theres medical expenses.
im yapping at this point but im fucking tired of a movement meant to look capitalism in the face and say "no. im not playing your stupid game anymore." has been co opted by the "entrepreneur" "self made" group that has the one goal of becoming as rich as possible.
i also feel its necessary to point out that going on a no buy immediately shows you're already in a place of privilege, that you're able to say "yknow. i think im gonna stop buying anything that isnt a need." because if you don't have a lot, thats just every day for you.
anyway heres my long ass ramble on how project pan lead me down the rabbit hole of realizing that at least in the US, consumption is worshipped above all, and if you can't afford to consume, you're left to fend for yourself. which i already knew, but this really hammered it home
guess who's doing project pan babeeyyyyy. also doing a makeup low buy because honestly im tired of clutter and waste in my life. here's where we're starting, i took these pics last night (01/08)
1. Laneige Lip Mask - I've had this forever and I really need to commit to using it up instead of cycling through different lip balms every night. It does what it's supposed to but isn't remarkable in any way so I wouldn't say it's worth the hype. It also has an overwhelmingly artificial candy taste to it that also mildly tastes like plastic. ive been using this every night so we'll see how long this takes.
2. Laura Mercier Highlighter - This was one of my first "grown up" purchases and because of that I've fallen into the "oh i should only be using this on special occasions!" mindset which is bs. life shouldnt be a museum, if it brings you joy, use it. the only way something is being wasted is if it's sitting rotting unused in a drawer. ive been using this every time i wear makeup lately because i like highlighter on me a lot more than i did when i was 16, it looks a lot better on my adult face than it did on my babyface.
3. Tartelette Tease Mini Eyeshadow Palette - I got this during the same shopping trip i got the highlighter, both are 9 years old now. And this palette has only survived this long bc plain browns and "safe" colors really arent my jam. i got it because thats kind of all i was allowed to wear out at 16. ive been using this every time i do my makeup and adding more interesting colors over top. ive had no problems with the formula and it blends well but it doesnt knock my socks off.
4. Japonesque Velvet Touch Blush - this was a free sample i got at ulta when i was 16 and back then i didnt use blush so it sat unused until just a few years ago. you can see i only hit pan because when i reached in my makeup bag it was open and my nail hit it. been using it every time i do my makeup and it's okay. not a color i'd pick for myself because i like cool tones better on myself but it isnt unusable so i use it.
5. Lancome Lipstick in shade Glamour - this came from my aunt's makeup box she asked if i wanted to go through because she doesnt wear much makeup anymore. this is one of the few products in this project pan that i love, although it's quite old so it needs using up. i really love almost any dark brown lipstick so this is likely going to be an easy pan. been using it every time i do my makeup and i havent noticed any abnormalities with the formula despite its age.
6. Nyx Lip Pencil in Espresso - i am in a COMMITTED relationship with this lip liner. the formula is perfect in that it's not too stiff and not too soft either. one of my favorite lip liner formulas and my absolute favorite color. i use it with almost every lipstick or gloss. depending on what else i have in my collection when i use it up, i may repurchase it.
happy december!! in an effort to making a habit out of project pan, i started tracking some of my empty products over the last few months!! every month i hope to make a post like this, going through my empties and either influencing or de-influencing you from them☺️
this post is gonna be extra long compared to ones i hope to post in the future!! i hope to make progress posts and post in real time when i finish things so my monthly updates and be a simple “what did i finish” and “would i recommend/buy again?!”
from L -> R
❄️ always gentle sensitive wash
i didn’t notice a huge change in my shower/cleanliness with this wash versus using regular soap!! i like that it was unscented and it truly was sensitive!!
would i buy again: probably not, only because i’ll just use sensitive bar soap :)
❄️ l’oréal infallible 3 second setting mist
omg i love this product, holy cannoli. when i tell you its hairspray for your face, its hairspray for your face. your shit isn’t moving anywhereeeee!!! especially great for going out, a long day at work, or just anything where you need your face makeup to sit and stay!
would i buy again: yes ma’am, i’m already halfway through my second bottle.
❄️ adult multivitamin gummies, up and up (target general brand)
i’m not gonna lie, i can’t tell the difference between using these gummies versus not. i’m trying out different general multivitamins and these ones were inexpensive.
would i buy again: sure! i do plan on going through with my dr. what vitamins and things i could use more of, to get a more specific need. i also would love target to get their shit together before buying more oop
❄️ truly whipped boob polish, nice melons
as a small boobie girly, i didn’t really need this product. it is curated to firm up the skin on your chest and boobs. however, there’s not much to work with for me, so i can’t tell if it worked or not.
would i buy again: if i had a larger chest, sure i would!! the exfoliation was great and the scent was very light and tropical.
❄️ pantene miracle moisture boost shampoo: rose water
i love the smell of this shampoo!! i wish it lasted longer though! if i shower at night, you can’t smell it when i wake up the next day:( this shampoo is great when complimented with other great products. on its own, it wasn’t really a miracle moisture boost. with other products and styling, im left with soft shiny hair than (day of my shower) smells like roses!! so it depends on your routine.
would i buy again: not at the moment! i’m trying different shampoos for a while!
❄️ elf power grip setting mist
i LOVE how fine the spray is!! it feels like nothing on top of your makeup!! however it doesn’t really grip unless you spray a ton on your face, which because of how fine it is doesn’t feel like a lot. but it means replacing your product more. it also has an odd smell lol!! when a lot of used however, i felt like it was a great setting spray!
would i buy again: not currently!
❄️ tree hut shea sugar scrub: sunlit glow
omg to all my floral, springtime baddies, this scrub is screaming your name. it’s pink and LITERALLY smells like flowers!! it’s not that fake kind of floral scent you get with cheap perfume. it’s a true, natural mixed floral scent!!!
would i buy again: yes!
❄️ *not pictured* tree hut she’s sugar scrub: papaya paradise
this smell was sooooo yummy!!! the perfect citrusy, floral summer scent!! it paired great with my summer body wash and just felt so warm and tropical!
would i buy this/these product(s) again: absolutely!! i’m such a tree hut stan and i’m alwaysssss trying new scents!! these two will definitely be making their way back into my shower in the future!!!
❄️ laniege overnight lip mask: berry
what is there bad to say about these masks??? they leave my lips feeling buttery soft and ready for the day!!! i still use a lip mask every night before bed. especially in the cold winter months, it really helps using one of these overnight to continue to combat chapped lips. definitely not a magic one night solution, but it helps tremendously and i’ve definitely seen a difference between using and not using the product!
would i buy this product again: when it is on sale or at marshall’s/tjmaxx🤭 it’s a little pricey so im open to more recommendations!!
❄️ tree hut shave oil: vanilla [x2]
i could kiss whoever started making shave oil at tree hut. i live, breathe, and will die for this shave oil. chefs kiss times a zillion!!! i always am left with the softest skin and the smoothest shave!! i use it on my legs and underarms and it works great on both!!
would i buy this product again: always and forever.
❄️ tree hut whipped shea body butter: vanilla
literally buttercream frosting disguised as lotion, i wanna eat it. this is my favorite vanilla lotion on the market!!! paired with a scrub and shave oil in the shower, adding this on top leave my skin soooo soft and smooth!
would i buy this product again: yes always.
❄️ philosophy mandarin mimosa body wash
so yummy and citrusy!!!!! it was a blend of mandarins, champagne, and i believe some kind of flower!! so nice for summer!
would i buy this product again: yes! on sale or at a discount store hehe!!
❄️ B&BW lovely dreamer lotion
i love their lotions!! the consistency and the actual lather and moisturizing elements are always fantastic!! this smell however… is the smell of my dreams😭 and i bought it at a semi annual sale😭😭 and it’s DISCONTINUED😭😭😭 it literally haunts me, i asked two coworkers last week what their perfumes were bc they smelt like this lotion. rip lovely dreamer😭😭😭
would i buy again: if fate brings us back together, hell fucking yes.
❄️ B&BW body wash: vanilla romance
i use their body washes as bubble bath, because i don’t feel like the scent sticks to my skin, nor does it do a ton for my skin other than cleaning a little bit more than just with bar soap alone. in the bath, they’re fabulous!! lots of bubbles and the whole room smells good!!
would i buy again: yes!
❄️ eva nyc mane magic 10 in 1 shine mask
this mask is the holy grail for my hair. i have very fine hair, and it sheds a lot, so i treat it like gold because i only have so much LOL! this makes it so soft and shiny!!! combined with the rest of my current routine, gives me the madison beer hair i’ve always dreamed of!!!
would i buy again: forever and alwayssss!!!
❄️ B&BW gingham gorgeous body wash AND lotion
these two are me in a scent!! so bright and florally and warm like the spring!!! peonies and peaches and strawberries and vanilla!!!
would i buy again: for the scent, yes! body wash: no. lotion: for the scent only, yes.
❄️ EOS shave oil: cashmere vanilla
okay controversial take, i don’t get the cashmere vanilla hype!! maybe it’s because i’s such a frosting/cupcake/cavity inducing sweet vanilla girl, but idk!! it’s not bad, at all!!! this shave oil is my backup when tree hut is sold out! it’s just not my number one. with that said, it’s an awesome shave oil!!! my only con is that the bottle is smaller than tree hut so i’m getting less for basically the same price!
would i buy again: sure, if tree hut is sold out!
if you read this whole thing, you get a kiss to the forehead. not sure what my next post will be. maybe some of my product routines?? (hair/skincare etc.) or maybe it’ll just be my next empties, idk LOL!!
the 2026 vibes🥂✨ i don’t usually do vision boards and resolutions bc i truly believe if you want something that bad, you’d do it on a tuesday in august instead of waiting for january. howeverrrrrr idk.. i’ve got a good feeling about this year!! maybe it’s bc my friends and i all drunkenly debriefed 2025 in a circle like girls do, but i just feel excited :) anywhosies happy new year!🥂🥳
