Productivity Boards
Mise-En-Place
Time-based, derived from the French kitchen style for putting everything in its place. Decent casual weekly planner.
Eisenhower Matrix
Priority-Based. Each quadrant represents a category for your tasks, depending on time-sensitivity and relevance to your goals. A compromise for extremely busy people who might not always be able to accomplish every task.
Multi-Stage Pipeline
Stage-based. Simple internal processes for people who want to fix their mistakes on the job. Add more stages if needed.
NWM (Name-Work-Meeting)
Client-Based (upcoming meetings have high priority). For the unfortunate souls with too many clients. Optionally, include a “Need” column for things the client has not provided you, yet.
how the FUCK did i manage with out procrastitracker. i'm still working on getting a style of work w treesheets but omg. it's great. and procastitracker. i just . i have been so used to thinking im useless and didnt write all a day and then i check it and. i wrote an hour and a half. i actually did that. I'm not lying to my self. THANK YOU JESUS
i’m so glad it’s been working for you! i haven’t tried procrastitracker yet because there’s no mac version but it sounds awesome :)
IM TRYING TREESHEETS the learning curve is steep but i think it's good and is helping me!! will update when im done outlining the thing i'm currently working on!! hope all goes well in your writing (and all other) endeavours today! best day to you!!
i’m so glad, let me know how it goes!! thank you!
So, I saw the ask you replied to about Tree Sheets earlier today, and I was like huh let's check it out. Now, I'm just going on a plotting frenzy in it because I'm not up for writing tonight, but I'm still full of ideas. I know my technique with this is going to change, but even starting out without much of a clue as to how I want to tackle things I am really loving it. So, thanks for cluing me in to its existence.
YES. JOIN ME IN TREESHEETS HEAVEN.
a lot of times i get in plotting mode over writing mode and treesheets is the only program i’ve found that moves the way my brain does. my maps look different for each project tbh.
oh and i just found that the same guy who developed treesheets also made a time keeping program called procrastitracker.
so do you use treesheets yourself? if yes, can you recommend tutorials / tips? I'm having trouble getting started in it (and yes i've read the included tutorial)
the thing about treesheets is that it’s a simple program that’s incredibly versatile. i use it for story plotting and worldbuilding, but you can also use it for computer programming and things, so a lot of its functionality can be narrowed down if you only want it as a creative writing tool.
i’ve never met anyone who has used it the same way i do but i’m also a huge nerd about data organization and spreadsheets. if your mind doesn’t think in tables and cells and stuff, then treesheets might not be for you.
big picture: it’s easiest to think of treesheets as excel or google spreadsheets, except with the additional ability to be able to put tables within cells. you’d think that capacity wouldn’t be so hugely monumental, but from an organizational perspective, it’s really helpful.
i’ll take you through how i use it for worldbuilding, with star wars as an example.
first, ctrl + n to create a new document. it’s gonna ask you how many cells you want, and default to 10 but you only need 1, because anything else is overwhelming.
maybe first you want to tackle plot, or characters, or you want to build a shell. this is what i like best about treesheets, you can just start typing stuff and you can modify the sheet as you go.
we’ll go ahead and make a dramatis personae. we’ll want a table within a cell. to do this, i’m going to label this cell “characters” and then Edit > Insert New Grid.
now i want to figure some stuff out about them, so i’m going to expand the grid right to put in more detail.
let’s say i want to plan out their character arcs a little, and i use the next column to get into even more detail.
so now we have our character table drafted. it looks pretty bland, and i’m a very color-oriented person, so i’m going to make the box pink by going to Cell at the top so that it stands out better.
i’ll do the same thing for Settings, more or less, except let’s say i don’t want tables, i want bubbles (i like the bubbles a lot). i’ll change the layout style to “bubble style rendering” by going to Edit > Layout and Render Style > Bubble Style Rendering.
and now we get to the meat of it, the plot. i use Line Style Rendering for plot because it looks like an outline.
we’ll round out our map with an additional details box and that’s pretty much it.
it might get really in depth, so that you lose the ability to look at the whole map. the zoom feature will be your friend. zooming in will center whatever cell you have highlighted, like this.
now you can make tables within tables within tables without having a billion files or notebooks or however else people do worldbuilding without treesheets.
i hope this helps! if anyone decides to start using treesheets and has some tips or tricks for me, let me know!
Great for brainstorming, to-do lists, reminders and study notes
