I hate being this type of "why didn't the character just act logically" fan but it drives me insane that quality of mercy doesn't even have Pike consider warning those children and quitting starfleet! Or taking a desk job or literally any other option besides this false binary literally invented by him. It would have been so much more interesting than a bad balance of terror ripoff if he had explored that option and concluded that it either still led to horrible outcomes or that he would rather choose a shorter career in starfleet and the good that came with it over his personal wellbeing. They could have even done the cliche more people will die if you leave thing which would have been a lot smarter and more interesting on a character level.
