Man stampede is just really fumbling it for me. I will say I like the Eye of Micheal lore we're getting, it's interesting to see them getting more fleshed out but still. It's coming at the expesnse of literally else :^/
okay I finally watched the dub of episode one and all is right with the world I can't believe how much I was counting on jonny yong bosch's weird little noises as part of vash's identity he's gotta sound like a panicked chicken it's IMPORTANT
I'm honestly not sure how to feel about stampede yet? I was surprised by the sheer volume of what they revealed about both vash and knives in the first episode and it define is starting off more focused on the action aspect than I may personally like. but it also looks way better than I thought it would, meryls expressions were honestly a highlight
talking about story now
the fact they already revealed vash and knive's relationship and their involvement in the ships crash makes me wonder where the story is going to go from here. is vash's plant status what they're going to build to instead? but how will that work when he's openly claiming knives (full on plant guy) as his brother? it's kinda fun to be guessing about this tbh! currently my money's on tesla making a reappearance since there seems to be more emphasis on the manga lore
the pacing feels. off. I know they're going for a more action movie marvel-esque feel but it still felt like it jumped around a lot for just one episode. but it's the first one so they did kinda have to front load world building. ALSO IM SO THRILLED TO HAVE A MAP!!!!!! I 100% paused and just looked at it once I realized we finally had some idea of the layout of Nomans Land (also I'm so happy that they're using that name, it's one of my favorite bits between the manga and og anime)
I'm still a little wary of how they're writing Meryl. I'm more fond of Roberto than I thought I'd be and they're dynamic is going to be a blast, and he's got Narrative Potential I can just smell it. But Meryl. Is very different in a way that makes me question her place on a narrative level. In both trimax and the og anime she was The Responsible Normal One, and that carried weight when the rest of the cast would spiral off on their wacky shenanigans and need grounding. Her being younger, more inexperienced, the designated naive one of the main cast- it does play into being a love interest and/or the audience insert for learing about plants/nomans land, but idk. it loses some of the flavor of who she was before and while I like this new Meryl it's as a completely new character. But that's also true with Vash to an extent, hes still goofy, still a loser <3. They're all very. Different so far. I'm still interested to see where they go
specifically though! it was interesting to see the difference in reactions Meryl had to Vash flirting with her in stampede vs other trigun stuff. maybe it's a new anime vs old anime trope thing, but the posing itself was noticeably different and it caught my eye. more exaggerated than flustered? idk how to say it but it was interesting to note
one last thing: there were a lot of insects that episode, and at the end we saw a bunch of the guys that had been following vash around head to knives' totally cool hovel tricked out boy cave. I think mayhap zazie really will play a bigger role in stampede and I for one am THRILLED to see my bug freak back <3
also!!! idk if it's a translation mishap but I deffo caught vash saying "I'll never kill again" in the teaser so HEY MY GUYS WHATS THE AGAIN MEAN?? I highly doubt that they're taking that line from after legatos hot boy summer moment, so is stampede going to change vashs whole character like that?? and even if it's after legato, it still doesn't sound like vash does in either the manga or anime but I guess we'll see ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
so. trigun stampede sure is going to be Something.
I'm not going to make any judegements yet about characters since this was a teaser designed to look as cool as possible so we're probably not gonna see any of our favorite silly boy for A While, and I'm actually pleasantly surprised by how much I didn't mind it being cg, but then there's everything else...
my real beef is with the fact that they seem to be doing a whole rewrite of the series which in of itself isn't bad per se, but the way they're going about it is super frustrating
the way trimax went had a good segue into a more high tech version of the series so they could've gone a multiple bullets route of doing a post trimax story with upgraded aethetics that could've fit in with the world already established (and keeping most of the main cast for that *coughs*) but nooooooooooooooooooooooo
the whole point of trigun is that this small offshoot of humanity is stuck on a world that is unfriendly to their very existence, struggling to get by with the scavenged corpses of technology that they dont understand and thus misuse despite their best intentions, with a megalomaniac set on destroy them all /because of their misunderstanding and ignorance!
to make it a cyberpunk takes away half of the very core of what trigun is about and I am going to go ballistic
it looks cool! but you cannot retell the same story and add in heaps of functional technology and have it be the same story!!!
In the end I will watch it, I will probably enjoy it, but I think that this choice has fundamentally lost part of what was so endearing about the story to me in the first place
I am deeply enraged that they took away Vash's beautiful spikey haircut!!! he's needle noggin!! not bowl of damp spaghetti head!!! and not even inviting the og casts back to voice act!!! that's just cruel tbh
