: So I want to be honest here, I adore Trese, but I am neither pinoy / filipino. My best friend is and I can talk to her about this, and with a wife of another friend. But I am as white as white can be. So I am going to try to approach this with as much respect to the author and the meta-mythology of the Philippines. And Trese is my first serious dive into it, but I am not new to entities such as Asway or Tiayanak. First off, I have viewed the original comics art and it has this dark horror vibe I adore.
The story of Trese is pretty straight forward, as a Babaylan (I'll short hand this as a spiritualist or shaman of sorts), Alexandra is an investigator who also owns a bar, the Diabolical. In her father's shadow the young girl is the go to person to handle the more supernatural fueled crimeds which can easily plague the Underworld of manila. From the get go, this show isn't pulling punches, yes the main story is voiced in English, but Tagalog is widely used by multiple characters. Plus, it appears they actually put thought into who they were casting when it came to the main characters. Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars) is our knife wielding lead.
The story itself is pretty thick with plot, but it never felt rushed. A lot of back story is told through black and white flashbacks throughout the six episodes of Part One. Trese is recently returned to Manila, and while she was gone for five years undergoing a massive trial in a sacred Balete tree. She is joined in her work by The Kambal, a pair of demi-gods, Crispin and Basilio. Both of them wear diamond shaped operatic masks as their ability to manifest various weapons is a mark of their heritage of the ancient god, Talagbusao, a powerful god of war who wants to clean the earth and reset the cycle.
A lot of stories have a notion of a character who is a destroyer of worlds, but few place it on a pair of twins. Few then have the very destroyer of worlds get his ass handed to him by a girl a quarter his size. There is something bloody cathartic when Trese rips into her enemies and sighs as they toss away any chance of compromise. Hell, one of the best parts about this world is that it's obvious that the various "Tribes" of the different supernatural species have their own thoughts, beliefs, and political stance.
The Tikbalang are a people of honor and love speed. Trese spares the Prince of the Tribe because she's able to talk the kid down from racing dangerous throughout the city. Meanwhile, she kills the Prince of the Babyon after the idiot nearly kills her and torches her car. Alexandra has a clear set of rules, you respect the accords and you don't kill innocents. She can be a bit brutal about it, but hell, she's dealing with creatures that eat people and can possess the bodies of dead children. There is a reason this is a horror anime, and WHY it is not for the faint of heart.
If you want to get a good idea of how some might interpret the rich folklore and mythology of the Philippines Trese is a good start. Honestly, with the explosion of non-Japanese anime this is a good time to explore the richness we often ignore in various parts of the complex nations of Eastern and Southeast Asia.
Pair of Trese OCs!! ((Trese is a SUPERB Comic here in the Philippines based on Filipino Myths, Legends, and Folklore. I HIGHLY suggest you check it out, whether or not youre from here!!))
Laura - A babaylan that works at a hospital in Metro Manila. She assists Trese when someone is hurt by enkantos. She can grow extra limbs at will, plus she's a single mother!! ((excUSE THE UGLY ASS BABY IM SO SORRY--))
Karina - An heiress here in the Philippines, she's tied closely with both Trese and the Madame ((Well, more like her father is)). She's usually the one that shows up at events, but most of the time she assists Trese in her cases by any way she can that won't affect her family name. ((May or may not be Trese's ex that ended on unclear terms?? IDK LET ME DREAM (T▽T) ))
