Plain Black Suite
I rarely wax poetic due to being focused on family, and work. But today is one of those rare days of reflection that one finds themselves in, me less so than most, I tend to look forward compared to dwelling in the past. But as I was getting ready this morning for a dear friend’s funeral, I started to think about my choice of attire. My plain black suit and a flood of memories flooded in. This one
suit, the oldest in my closet, has a life time of memories all its own. From elation to sadness, from violence to calm. This one simple suit, has been blessed by Bishop TuTu, shaken hands with heads of state, has been scanned by the FBI, Secret Service, DSS and may other acronym departments. It has attended eleven funerals, three weddings (including a drunken Vegas Little White Chapel elopement that really shouldn’t have happened). It has witnessed amazing human triumphs after 9/11, and the social degradation of many parts of our society. Tears of joy and sadness and pain have been shed on it. It has been the host of celebrities, political figures, and million dollar weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. This one simple, Black, Made in America, Kenneth Cole suit is the personification of myself, I am it and it is me….
