Our pootle down the Saone brought us to Trevoux, the first French town that we’ve been to that has a rather Mediterranean aesthetic: the terra cotta roofs on houses that gradually ascend the hillside. 

On this boat it is almost impossible to see a hill without feeling the need to climb it. Especially ones with castles on. We moored, Dad whinged about the price of mooring and we were off, searching for a way up. 

We were fairly successful, navigating the streets easily enough, even if that meant stopping every five seconds for the immobilieres. A dog chased a cat, whose owner then chased it, leading to the dog running down the hill at us. I needlessly traversed some knee high grass and then climbed a fence to escape. Any excuse to climb a fence. 

The castle was closed so we went in search of a lookout point in time for sunset. We ended up on a quickly deteriorating path and someone went too far ahead, took a different turn to the rest of us and resulted in our best impressions of Swallows and Amazons owl calls in order to find him. At least the nettles were few and far between.
