i'm averaging one comment per 34 words. 19% of the prose is flagged as "i do not like this at all and will need to heavily revise." i am a normal amount of critical of my own work 👍
when i write, i have a system of highlights to point things out to my future self. yellow means "i'm not sure about or actively dislike this bit and should rephrase when editing." orange is the rather specific "i have accidentally used the same or a similar word or phrase in a short span of time and should rephrase one or both instances while editing." cyan means "this is a detail that i should not forget about, because it either will or can be tied back to in later" (as in the case of foreshadowing). green means "i love this bit and should appreciate it when i reread."
this system is especially helpful for combating my perfectionism. there are times when i need event C to happen in order to progress from A to B, but i hate every way i've thought of phrasing C. i will hesitate on C until i've forgotten what B was, or i will skip ahead to B and forget what i had intended for C, leaving B adrift and incoherent. highlighting in yellow tells me that i have permission to do it badly. it's an acknowledgement that i can do better, and i will, after i make it exist.
with these highlights, a pattern has begun to emerge. many times on a reread i will change parts, unedited, from a yellow to a green. the thing that i hated as i wrote it becomes a thing that i love as i read it.
if there's a moral to this story, it's that a refusal to let yourself be bad limits your ability to be good.
pisses me the fuck off that the word "iamb" is not in fact an iamb. cmon you had one job. there are literally two syllables how do you fuck that up. straight-up a 50/50 chance of getting it right. come the fuck on.
i live in this weird space in fandoms where i don't draw and i'm not particularly fanfiction-minded, so my fanwork mediums get weird FAST. my recent favorites to create are fan-spreadsheets, fan-filks, and fan-charts of cognitive dissonance.
why is it always lips and hair that alien/monster designers get rid of to make a humanoid unsettling and distinctly inhuman. why not get rid, of, like, fingernails
