Trichotomy - Depth of Field - trio’s latest track in a series of collaborations with percussionist Nozomi Omote

Sean Foran - piano John Parker - drums Samuel Vincent - bass Nozomi Omote - vibraphone and marimba Trichotomy collaborate with master percussionist Nozomi Omote on a new work written by Trichotomy drummer John Parker for the trio + Vibraphone and Marimba. Composer John Parker says: In photography, the term Depth of Field relates to the “the distance between the nearest and the farthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus in an image”. I’ve been interested in this concept for some time and how it could translate into music through the use of polytonal and polyrhythmic manipulation. In the group Trichotomy we often experiment with these concepts in real time via improvisation and extended sections which provide scope for this to occur. Composers such as Prokofiev and Stravinsky have been key influences on my writing and how they have used polytonality and rhythm to great effect. I wanted to use this opportunity to extend my harmonic and rhythmic palette.

FIRST OF ALL, thank you, my lovely Bry ( @hnn-tr ) for letting me submit him for this!!! 

Let’s meet, once again, Shouichi Himaya. Age: 22 Occupation: Medical intern (general practice) Traits: Friend of the World | Cheerful | Outgoing | Foodie How did he meet Aman?: Way back in high school, in another life almost, they met at that one party that Cassidy dragged him too. Boy was that quite the night!  Backstory: All Shou ever wanted in life was to make friends and play basketball. As long as he had those two things, nothing else mattered. During his senior year, it all started to fall apart. After a few poor choices on his part, he found himself feeling alienated by everyone around him. So he did what most people do, he applied to San Myshuno University, and went back to the city he grew up in. Luck would have it that he managed to get in. On a full basketball scholarship as well!

Everything seemed perfect. He had a great life. Lots of good friends. Was at the height of his basketball career. They even said there was a good chance that he would make the pros! It was half-way through his final year he missed stepped and it ended everything. He tore his knee, requiring major surgery. His star basketball career over before it ever had a chance to begin. As they handed him his Pre-Med degree, he felt empty. Here he was, the life he thought he had, nothing more than a distant dream. 

It was a few months after he reevaluated his life and decided if he couldn’t have what he originally wanted, that maybe he needed to do something drastic. So what did he do? He took that premed degree, enrolled in a Doctor’s without Borders program and took off to Sulani in hopes of finding new dreams to pursue.

He kissed him once and then once more. Then once again until all the world around him was drowned out and the singular thing that existed in the world was Roberto. All Roman could hear was the quickness of Roberto’s breath. Taste the lingering of cheap beer on his tongue. Feel the smoothness of his skin, sticky from the hot Del Sol Valley air. All things that he craved. He could sit there at that moment, freeze it like a picture to enjoy over and over again. 

He pushed his hand between them, nudging Roberto back until there was enough distance that Roman could catch his breath. He wished he didn’t look at Roberto’s face, stunned and confused like he had whiplash from how quickly Roman had switched gears this night. 

“I’m sorry,” Roman said, his voice the broken image of his heat. “I can’t.”

“You can’t?” Roberto echoed the words in disbelief. “You seemed like you could a few minutes ago.”

“I’m not thinking straight.”

“Were you not thinking straight that night in the woods either?” Roberto asked, even though they both knew the answer to that. Both times Roman had been swept up at the moment. From factors out of his control. “You can’t tell me you don’t feel anything.”

“You can’t tell me you do.”

He looked like he had been punched for a second time that night. “What are you talking about?”

“How can you stand there and tell me when you care about me when this is what you do? You back me into these corners where I don’t know which way is up and you expect me to know what I want or how to feel. Who does that? Right now the only thing I feel is manipulated.”

“Roman, I–”

Roman had already had enough. “We should go back,” he cut Roberto off before he could have another chance to explain knowing if he did, he might just as well believe him.

By the time they were more booze than water, Cassidy decided it was time to round them all up. Dancing, laughing, partying, it was good and fun, but it wasn’t what Cassidy was here for. No, she wanted secrets, scandals, something she could whisper about in the halls for the next week. She knew just the way to get it.

She made her way over to the stereo, pressing the stop button without warning. There was a collective groan throughout the room. “Come on!” Evan yelled from the back. “That was my jam.”

“You can shake your thing at any party,” Cassidy stuck her tongue out at him, “Right now, I think we’re at the point we should kick things up a notch.” 

“What do you have in mind?” Dhruv asked as he plopped down on the worn yellow sofa in the room. 

“I think we’

“Oh for the love of!” Haley protested. “What the hell is it with you and truth or dare? Don’t you remember what happened the last time we played?” 

“Seriously?” Naoki asked, crossing their arms over their chest. “What are we, back in middle school?”

Cassidy took the spot next to Dru, leaning her head into her hand. She didn’t have to say anything, everyone just gathered around her. She was just that kind of girl. The girl that whatever she was doing you wanted to be a part of, and this was no exception. “If you think this is for middle schoolers, you’re not playing it right,” Cassidy said. “Now are you pussies in, or not?”

They looked back and forth at each other, none of them wanting to admit to being a pussy. It was Aman, high on his new found love of the party life, that finally spoke up. “We’re in.”
