These were in the original cut. It was wild.
I actually saw the original cut!
It’s kind of mind-blowing to me, in fact, that the original cuts are so hard to find that people automatically assume I saw the Special Editions. I don’t blame you, clearly it’s like a thing, but I had an amazing number of people ask me where I got them and if I’d share them. They are on torrent, but admittedly they’re not exactly easy to find. I had people who teach film studies ask for them so they could finally show Theatrical Release/Special Edition comparisons in class.
It’s just so bizarre to me that the...well, the owner, I suppose, of this set of narratives, dislikes his perfectly good original versions so much that he’s made it impossible for people who like his stories to even find them. I can’t think of another canon where such a deliberate effort has been made to keep people away from such a giant chunk of the material. I’m sure some of it is circumstance, IE we changed media formats from VHS to DVD relatively shortly after the films were made, but it’s not like it would have been hard to simply release already-extant footage along with the new stuff on DVD.

It's probably the crazy Jim Henson influence.
That actually makes a lot of sense -- all of those scenes I mentioned would be 100% normal and I wouldn’t think twice about them if I saw them in a Muppets movie. It’s the high-fantasy strong-narrative drama element that makes them seem so out of place.

I'm sure someone else has said this in the comments, but if you want Space Oceans Eleven with Han Solo, read Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn. It's pretty good! https://www.amazon.com/Scoundrels-Star-Legends-Timothy-Zahn/dp/0345511514
Thanks! I can’t promise I’ll get to it immediately but it’s going in my queue!

Maybe a Three Things? I miss Three Things
Oddly enough, without meaning to that’s kind of what I did!
I should start doing Three Things again. I stopped because if I happened to say anything even remotely controversial or analytical I’d end up getting dogpiled in comments, and there’s no real fun in not actually providing any analysis when I do media commentary. On Tumblr it might tone down the “am I really going to have this argument for the fifteenth time in this same post” element that was so joy killing on LJ/DW.
