Signage: Trinidad

A few years ago, a photographic exploration of the west brought me to Trinidad, Colorado. My interest in the town was due to the railroad history—the ATSF came through here in 1878 on its way toward Santa Fe and beyond.

This visually interesting spot, above, is called Simpson’s Rest Overlook. The grave and marker of Pioneer George S. Simpson’s are on the top off the bluff adjacent to the TRINIDAD lighted sign.

I awoke before dawn as I wanted to get a shot of the sign that looms over the relatively small town. I got it from below when lit, but it shut off as I approached it atop the bluff. No matter, I like it silhouetted against the coming dawn.

Return to Raton

On my way to northeast part of New Mexico recently, I drove over the famous Raton Pass once again. As opposed to nearly four years ago, when it was pleasant, the snow fell this time.

This trip marks my first time out to the Southwest since prior to the pandemic—it was good to get out into the field once again. I will make a long series of posts here which contain a very rough cut of selects from the trip.

In the older photograph here, an eastbound Amtrak Southwest Chief is passing the St. Aloysius Church Remains. The train recently cleared Raton Pass and is now approaching Trinidad, Colorado.
