Robber Fly (Triorla interrupta), male, taken June 23, 2026, in Georgia, US
A robber fly resting gently on the warm sand, waiting for an unfortunate prey item to fly by! The thing I love most about the process of photographing robber flies is that, most of the time, they choose and spot and stick to it. This guy liked his sand patch, so, when I scared him, he flew a foot or two away, looped back around, and landed in nearly the same spot he was before. This gives me almost unlimited tries to get in a position for good photos, and I definitely succeeded here. I love this individual's relaxed stance; he's saving his energy until he sees something tasty!
