Welcome to the Erie Canal and Basin in Medina, NY. The Erie Canal was the life blood of commerce in NY State. The Erie Canal is a canal ran 363 miles from the Hudson River in Albany to Lake Erie in Buffalo. It was built to create a navigable water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the open waterways of the Great Lakes. Here are some highlights from a recent trip to the North Pole in Medina, NY. Santa was busy in his shop but we still had a good time exploring and shopping in this small town in Upstate New York. Medina is a sleepy little town with that was established in 1832 and is about an hour from both Rochester and Buffalo, New York. Medina has some great little shops and restaurants and is about 25 minutes from the shore of Lake Ontario. It is also well known for their Railroad Museum. The village of Medina developed after construction of the Erie Canal, passes through the village. The shape of the canal created a basin that served as a natural stop over point and became a thriving center of trade and commerce for boats and barges traveling along the Erie canal. Mills were constructed in town to take advantage of water power. The fertile lands around the village yielded fruit and corn which was exported to New York City and markets west of the canal. At the start of the 20th century, Medina was a thriving town.
