competition season.

If you teach dance, you know it's competition season. You know that studio owners are charging parents and arm and a leg for their children to travel, be costumed, and compete in the popular competitions ( especially down here in the south east). I've been working for the YMCA for 2 years. The Charlotte community is very interesting. Like many other cities, Charlotte is divided up into neighborhoods representing communities marginalized by the lack of distribution of wealth. My boss at the Y hosts an annual "competition" that allows dancers from unique backgrounds and neighborhoods across the city to showcase their dance talents. This is important to me because I taught little girls and boys whose parents could barely afford to pay for class, let alone a competition fee and costume fee. Dance is one of my passions and I want every child to have an opportunity to experience it. 

I don't care much for the competition aspect of anything, but I do believe in giving kids the space to express themselves. I was also delighted that they didn't dance on a traditional stage, but a gym floor in front of their parents, friends, and supporters. 

I also had the opportunity to attend another wonderful dance showcase called Loose Leaves. A colleague of mine-Salena Mable Stamp put the show on. The point of the showcase is to give dancers in the community an opportunity to dance in front of an audience who may not have access to funds for space, or dancers who may not be connected to a large company or group, but they have dance to share. I am grateful to people in this community who think past the stage. I am grateful to work with a group of people who think that it's important to articulate messages through bodies with dance-making and choreographing. I'm extremely inspired by artists who make it a point to queer spaces and performances. 

Today was filled with so much dance.
