I’m having thoughts about McVries book death today.

I’m having thoughts about how Garraty describes it. Or how he doesn’t, rather. In the book you get all the gory details about how most of the boys die, the two most notable being Olson and Parker but most boys get a description.

You don’t get that with McVries, you don’t even get told that his body hits the ground with a “mail sack thud”.

He’s smiling, and then he’s gone, and then Garraty is walking again. Like he can’t even wrap his head around it, or he refuses to. He just completely blocks it out.

Self shippers with moral OCD: your f/os love you and they would never judge you for your intrusive thoughts!

They will support you in anyway they can—even if sometimes that’s just listening and doing their best not to reassure you.

Something or another about the long walk and the critique of violence as spectacle.

Like. Ok. Stebbins story that he tells about the end of the Long Walk he watched and how he doesn’t know what the winner wished for. He’s not just being a cryptic asshole, he doesn’t know because he was part of the crowd and the crowd doesn’t care about what the winner wished for. The Long Walk was never about the boys as people, but about the collective walkers being used as a spectacle.
