The plates had been $24 for 24 at the dollar store, each ceramic and wonky colors that no doubt had some toxic paint making them so vibrant. And the aluminum bat -- well, it’d been in the family for some time so it was always there to grab. Dusty had fetched it from their sliding glass door, which led to the tiny patio that surely nobody would even repel up to break into. Yet, the bat stayed there to secure the door day in and day out. The Marsh family would be okay without it for a single night.
She showed up outside Tristan’s door without a warning tonight, trying to remember the hours he’d said he worked. She knocked with the tip of the bat, playing a balancing act with her other arm, hip, and a box of kitchenware. As the door swung open, Dusty said as close to a sorry as she could ever manage, “I’m an idiot.” Except it wasn’t Tristan who’d opened the door, but... his roommate...?
Jescaiah nodded with an amused smirk, “We all are most of the time. Except, not me. Tristan!” She called for him and disappeared down the hall with a wave, handbag, and ponytail thrown over her shoulder in a single swoop.
“Fuck me,” Dusty groaned, knowing she’d have to do it all over again in three, two... He appeared this time. “I’m an idiot and don’t make me say it again. I’m tapped out ‘til next year.”
