Lumen slowly lifts her gaze from the nightshade she’d beencrushing into a paste. Babette, the Dark Brotherhood’s resident vampire, neverengaged in idle talk. Every word, every question, served a purpose. But Lumenwas hard-pressed to discern the reasoning behind this particular line ofquestioning.
“Well I did save the fucking world,” she said at length. “Somewould say that makes me a good person.”
“But you did it for us. You did it for your family. Somewould say that’s a purely selfish reason.”
Lumen sighed through her nose. “I kill people other peopledon’t want around anymore. It’s a public service.”
Babette laughed.
“Fine.” She set the mortar and pestle down. “I’m not a goodperson. I’ve never been a good person—and I don’t fucking care. What does itmatter anyway? People believe what they want.”
“It doesn’t matter. I just wanted to know your thoughts,”Babette said with a smile. “And now I do.”
