Friday was cultural day. Started with a series of cultural demonstrations on the stage by various troops from various countries. Examples of traditional dances and such from Japan, New Zealand, Ireland and other places. There were also lots of games for the Scouts to participate in … like soccer, rugby, and the latest craze, #SpikeBall (you bounce a ball off a net just above the ground). Lots of people dressed up in traditional cultural garb. Of course, for the Americans, that was just shorts and t-shirts! This went on from 10am – 2pm in our subcamp Then from 2 – 4 everyone could taste traditional foods from the various countries. #TroopUSA403, of course, served our Northwest salmon. Had more than enough! Because we are in a campsite that is back off the main road (backed up against the woods) we had much less foot traffic than the site along the main road. The salmon was well received by all who tried it. The two patrols serving took 1 hour shifts each. They explained to the people about this being Pacific salmon as opposed to the Atlantic, and did a very nice job with that. Since we had extra apples from the meals before, we also handed those out as well. Then it was time for a quick and off to the Unity Show. Just like the opening show, it started with a one hour warmup, while waiting for the stadium to fill. Then show began, and it was very well done. It is a show about diversity, particularly in religious beliefs. It had Scouts from all over the world, representing all the different religions (Protestant, Sikh, Buddha, Hindu, LDS, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, etc) offering a brief prayer and/or explanation of their faith and it’s importance in their life. This was all presented by a native American explaining some of their beliefs and how we all need to work together to understand and unlock the possibilities within us. Following the main show, there was another concert … this time Broadway does Disney. Four Broadway performers doing numbers from Tarzan, Little Mermaid, Newsies, Lion King, Mary Poppins and ending with Frozen. Phenomenonal show. Thanks to Scoutmaster Pomeroy for the accounting.
