Tropical Gar (Atractosteus tropicus)
...a species of freshwater gar (Lepisosteidae) that occurs from southern Mexico to Costa Rica. Atractosteus tropicus is fairly similar in color and markings to its northern cousin the longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus) but can be distinguished by its shorter broader snout. Like other gar species, tropical gars are predatory, feeding on a range of aquatic invertebrates and a myriad of fish (especially cichlids) using its long snout.
