The Wet Tropics is one of the most significant ecosystems in the world. It provides an unparalleled living record of the ecological and evolutionary processes that shaped the flora and fauna of Australia over the past 415 million years. The Wet Tropics represents less than 0.001% of the land surface of Australia but has the highest diversity of species on the continent. I could go on forever with statistics about this amazing part of the world but I'll save it for another time. I'm fortune enough to be living in a nature refuge within The Wet Tropics and I'm having a real hard time deciding whether to stay outside and explore the area or stay inside and draw every beautiful thing I see! It provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region.

29 June 2017 – The majority of the world’s most vulnerable communities are in the Tropics, and will be most affected by environmental threats, the United Nations today said, marking the first ever observance of the International Day of the Tropics. “Loss of biodiversity is greater in the Tropics than in the rest of the world,” according to the Day’s official website, which noted that the region hosts some 80 per cent of the world’s biodiversity and much of its language and cultural diversity. The UN has projected that by 2050, the region will host most of the world’s people and two-thirds of its children.
