Non-fiction exercise #2 (Honest)
Sometimes I’m too honest. Sometimes people need somebody who will sugar coat things and help them feel okay, but that’s not me. Sometimes I feel bad about that, I want to be there for them, I want to make people happy but my words don’t always come out right.
I went to a work party as my friends date once and it was nice. Their company had rented out a banquet hall and there was an awards assembly, food and a photo booth. I met their other friends and I thought the night went well, they thought it did too, or so they told me. I later found out that my anxiety of going to an event where I only knew two people out of the hundred or so that were there, showed. The uncomfortableness of the situation made my bluntness come out.
Their coworkers thought I was too “rough around the edges”, I was too stubborn, too opinionated. I was too everything, too much. My friends didn’t feel the need to tell me, but I still found out. When I first found out it hurt, my whole life my mother had raised me to be strong, defend myself and speak my mind. Being a girl didn’t matter, the virtues I grew up on were honesty, commitment and loyalty.
You’re going to meet people in life with different values then you, these values may even clash. What’s important is that you stay true to yourself. Even though people may not like your personality, personality can’t be changed. Your personality is who you are, it is your habits, it is your likes, dislikes, how you react to things. Personality is you and you is great. Don’t let anybody tell you you’re not enough, or you’re too much because you are perfect just the way you are.
