the silence just wants to have a conversation

In the last 25 years this house has stood, its windows have seen trees razed to the ground. Once a forest, this soil,has grieved broken nests and the screeches of sorrow.

In this very house, 17 years since the stillness hasn’t left. It has been wanting to let out but has been quelled like a monster beaten back to its place under the bed. I feel it most at night’s darkest hour when I wrap myself in a heavier blanket. It senses another nest on the verge of breaking.

Just this time, it’s mine. The silence just wants to have a conversation. It’s the breath held after glass breaks and voices pierce the thickest of skin. It’s the silence that trembles when my mother’s chin rises while her eyes shimmer like glass shards in harsh sun.

It thrives in our bellies where things we don’t say froth and boil.

Today it spoke. He knows better than to cut her branches. He knows to not hurt her. He knows that every wrong syllable weighs heavily and quakes the walls in wordless warning.

And I breathe easier now. The shadows have spoken at last. They whisper promises of catching this nest lest it fell.
