re: Vienne, while obviously personal interest was a big factor in what she did, her overall goals seemed to be focused on helping others or making things better in general. Keeping Matty from becoming a killer, creating a more egalitarian Alderode with the March, etc. The major difference between her and Quigley seems to be idealism vs cynicism; Vienne could envision a better world and wanted to make it reality, while Mathis was mostly focused on surviving in the world that currently exists.
(Also, it seems a bit unfair, both by readers and Mathis, to put all the blame for Matty on her; it's not like he wasn't involved in making that happen either.)
