summary: Reader cries to Gohan and begs for him to stay with her.

“Gohan…” You whispered, your mouth resting against his bicep.

“Mhm?” He hummed. Even in the night, the only thing that lit his room was the moon, yet his eyes still glimmered and shone as they fell upon you.

Your head rested against his shoulder as you both sat on his bed, both of your backs against the wall and facing the window.

“Please don’t leave me.” Mumbling quietly, you began to fidget with the hem of your shirt.

Gohan’s eyebrows furrowed as he watched you bite your lips and the way you avoided his gaze.

“What do you mean, Y/n?” You have had these talks before with Gohan but watching you say raw words such as those created a different atmosphere that Gohan wasn’t used to.

You couldn’t bring yourself to say anymore, even just the thought of Gohan leaving you alone brought you to tears. The rest of the Z fighters were gone, it was just Gohan, Trunks and you. You had lost your little brother to the androids but Gohan was there for you at your lowest. You needed him with you. You wanted him to live.

“Y/n?”

“Promise me, Gohan. Promise me that you’ll stay.”

“Y/n, I’m not going anywhere.” He said, moving the one arm he still had to gently caress your hair.

“I don’t care Gohan if the androids still exist, I just don’t want you to die.” You finally felt tears rolling down your face as you felt yourself release a burden you and Gohan didn’t know you were carrying.

“I just want you, me, Trunks, Bulma and Chi Chi to be okay. That’s all I want, Gohan.” You gripped his shirt, a sob made its way through you, tears splattering down onto your clothes and onto Gohan's bed.

“Hey, hey, Y/n.” He frantically began to wipe the tears from your face. Gohan then closed his arm around your head so that you were pulled into his chest. He kissed your head as your cries were stifled by his figure, his lips remaining on your head for a few seconds.

“I’m right here, shhh.” Gohan was unsure what to say. His father never taught him this, taught him how to lie about something that could be unpreventable. He wants to promise to you, he wants to just as badly as you want him to. But he can’t. He can’t because he knows he’s not strong enough to defeat the androids on his own. So all Gohan could do is rock you slowly until you fell asleep.

“I love you, Y/n. You matter so much to me and I’ll protect you till the end.” Gohan took his arm away from you so that he could gently place his fingers under your chin, bringing your lips towards his as you softly kiss.

And for a moment, you could forget about all of your worries. For a moment the androids didn’t exist. For a moment it was just you and Gohan, against all odds, against the world.

Inching away from Gohan so that your lips just ghost over each other, you whisper back to him, “I love you too.”

It wasn’t exactly uncommon for people in your timeline to be worried - let alone, to be permanently on edge - but the tense knot in your gut was a whole new feeling compared to what you were used to. You watched the front yard without so much as breathing; or maybe you were breathing - if you were, you couldn’t tell; and you could barely feel your leg impatiently shaking beneath the table. You needed to pay attention and to spot to the slightest movement outside when it happens. You had no focus left to spare on the cramping in your thigh. Yet, the knot in your gut still wasn’t the same as the feeling you’ve grown so used to under the maniacal thumb of two sibling androids.

This was so... unique - a word not common in your world, where everyone repeats the same horrifying day over and over again.

It was like someone had stuck a knife in your stomach, but it was laced with an anesthetic, so it didn’t hurt; it was like someone had dug their fist into your ribs with an almost super-saiyan-like punch, but it was to force poison back up your throat and save your life; it was like someone ripped your stomach from your body, but they did it to replace it with one that wasn’t defective; and it was like the love of your life had left an hour ago, to fight a monster that has already killed him in a different timeline, but you still felt something deep insie of you:

hope.

It wasn’t something you were used to. It wasn’t even a word that people spoke aloud anymore. But, seeing Trunks’ face, so serious and strong, as he told you he will be back after he finally killed Cell, you couldn’t help but believe him. He hasn’t had time to tell you everything that happened in the different timeline, but he wasn't the same impatient, unsure boy who had challenged the androids when he wasn’t ready.

Distracted for a moment by the memory of his red cheeks when you touched his long hair in shock, you felt your lips twitch into a small smile. Despite how he’s changed, it made you happy that, on the inside, he still carried the parts you had fallen so deeply in love with. Not to mention, he didn’t fall out of love for you - that’s always a bonus when your boyfriend stays away for months and it’s just a second for you.

You quickly jolt out of your chair when the click of the front door echoes across the broken Capsule Corp. building. You didn’t even consider that it might be Cell as you immediately ran for the entrance, your heart racing with a confusing mix of excitement and feat. And lucky for you, it was Trunks’ silly “well, I did it” smile that was waiting for you in the doorway. Not so lucky for him, however, as you collided your crying face into his chest with a desperate hug, completely catching him off guard and sending him crashing back with a totally-manly yelp.

“You had me worried half to death!” You sobbed, only then truly realizing how terrified you had been, “I’ve already almost lost you once, you jerk!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” He chuckled sheepishly and resists the urge to console his own aching head from the fall - how that hurts but not Cell’s attacks, he doesn’t know - to gently stroke the back of your head, “But I didn’t; I am home.”

Playfully punching his shoulder, knowing what he said definitely meant he wasn’t taking you seriously, he let out another small laugh.

“I’m home?” He tried again, suddenly suspiciously sweet.

There was a long pause before you sighed in defeat, wiped your face on his clothes for revenge, hoisted up your head, and glared at him as you mumbled a soft, “Welcome home.” Knowing he won, he just grinned victoriously, making you roll your eyes. Lovingly, of course. “So...” You hummed on top of him, finally getting ready to just enjoy how comfortable he was, “Is it finally over?”

“Yes. It’s finally over.”

Training with Future Trunks would include...

...at first, only watching Gohan train him from the distance, being there for support and whatever else he may need, but after Gohan passed, Trunks took you as his pupil. You always had a hypothesis that he did it to still keep living the dynamic he had with Gohan.

...him not taking it serious, barely using any of his strength while you two are sparring and only teaching you really small things, like how to fly or hide your energy, instead of teaching you how to fight, no matter how many well you’ve mastered the rest.

...you slowly getting frustrated with him, but him always denying it when you’d call him out.

- until finally, you’d ask how he ever expects you to help him fight the androids if he doesn’t toughen you up.

“What are you talking about? You’re never going up against them.”

...you snapping and telling him he’s doing the same to you that Gohan did to him, yelling that he should know how that feels, before flying home.

...him being right - you weren’t really interested in being a fighter - but you wanting to help people by fighting the androids. It hurts too much to sit on the sidelines while the world around you crumbles.

...him showing up at your home to apologize, avoiding your eyes as he says you’re right, with his usual uncharacteristically bashful pout. It’s always baffled you how different he is to the person who shows up when he’s fighting.

...finally being treated like a fighter during training, and although it led to a lot more painful mornings, plenty of bruises and scars, and long hours of wearing compresses, he’d always smile proudly while placing those very same compresses on your wounds.

...steadily, thought he’d keep praising you for how quick it happened, changing from his student into his training partner.

...you actually being the one to cut his hair most of the time - it’s something you considered doing as a job before the androids kind of made any artistic job meaningless to society while they cowered in fear.

...trying to insist that you should go with him to his mission in the future, but him telling you no, no matter how hard you’d try.

“With Gohan gone and with me leaving… Earth will need someone to help fend off the androids.”

...defeated, watching his ship disappear and feeling the coming weeks stretch out like months while you wait for him to get back, making him proud while he’s gone by saving as many people from the androids’ fun as you can and keeping up your strength.

...tackling him into a hug when he got back, unstabilizing him and his mind for a moment as he’d turn bright red, but your greeting not lasting long when you noticed his new power level.

...him blinking in shock as you’d immediately try to get him to train you more, wanting to catch up.

...you finally accepting your differences and standing back for him to take care of the androids, but only to suddenly get shoved forward by Trunks, him giving you a mischievous look as he tells you to take care of them, saying that is how his father trained him.

...you having thought he was just teasing you, but you wanting to show off how you’ve improved, too, and so, flying into battle without complaint. It taking some time before he’d admit to how impressed he was.

...him obviously eventually helping you - you weren’t quite on that level yet - but still letting you do most of the work, knowing he’s strong enough to save you if he needs to - except, when he went to fight Cell, he asked you to stay back, not wanting to risk anything.

...you two still training together after everything was finished and the world was freed, and not just because you were trying to reach his level, but something about it always felt different - more meaningful.

...you to being the start of the new Z-fighters.

...with the war over, you two finally having the chance to consider why you’ve always been so attached to one another. Gohan has certainly teased you two enough about it before he died, so it didn’t take too long to figure it out.
