Black Torch vol.1 by Tsuyoshi Takaki

Bleach vibes are strong with this one.

I’m not complaining!

It’s just that the MC’s design really reminds me of Ichigo, could be the linework, the proportions, the character design...or all of it together.

Plus a black cat. Plus katana.

I do really like the fight choreography, the blow-by-blow panels of the fight - I think the mangaka really managed to capture the slow-motion feeling of it, the trading of blows at a fast pace. The sketchy lines and particles flying from blows and jumps. Delightful.

One thing that annoyed me is Ichika, maybe I just don’t like tsundere characters? or maybe I don’t like her, we’ll see - mange is only 5 volumes so I might as well continue it. Unless I get really annoyed with it. Her fanservice doesn’t make me like her more.

But there’s Rago to smooth over all the rough edges. I am absolutely a cat person so Rago makes up for a lot hahaha

It could be that I’m rarely in the mood for ‘the main character doesn’t know anything so the character in the know belittle them for it’ plot or ‘we protect the common sheep’ trope - but it seems to be going okay here so I’ll let volume 1 off for it. MC doesn’t seem to take any of it to heart or as a personal faliure thank the stars.

It also looks like Rago will be taking Jiro’s side more and more so I’m definitely down for sassy shoulder cat commentary from him.

Will definitely be reading more of this - we’ll see if I manage all 5 volumes, but I am going to try.

Recently, I’ve stared down my backlog of manga and it stared back at me, begging me to just try one volume.

So I set out to do just that.

A Try 1 challenge, of sorts... and I must say that while it seems like an easy thing to do I’m the type of person who gets anxiety whenever a character find themself in a stressful situation.

An emphatic reader so to speak.

I tend to put the volume down until I feel ready to continue, until my heartrate goes down.

This becomes a problem when I get distracted by a multitude of other things I could be doing or other manga, fanfics, books I could be reading or videos I could be watching.

I haven’t given up thoguh - even if it took me a few days to get through a volume I did do it! :D

So far I’ve completed Vol. 1 of Golden Kamuy, Vol. 1 of SIlver spoon and even managed to finish reding Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories manga!

Today I’m chewing through Vol.1 of Black Torch and having some kind of feeling about it, but more on that later :D
