This is an interview with Evan from Emo boys Marietta because he was a greedy boy and didn't let the other boys join in. I hope you enjoy it. x
Hello Evan from Marietta, would you like to introduce yourself and what you do in the band?
I'm Evan Lescallette and I play guitar and sing in Marietta.
We'll start off nice and easy. Why did you call your band Marietta?
We originally wanted to call our band mount joy, which is a town close to our home towns, but found out that name was taken. Then we picked Marietta because it's another town close to our hometowns and we are boring.
Your first release came out in Febuary last year. How do you feel you've progressed since then to now?
When I wrote the songs on our first release, I was definitely just starting to get used to alternate tunings. I feel like as I’ve gone on playing around with new tunings and stuff I've become better at writing songs that more skilfully utilize them. And beyond that I feel like as time passes, my song writing changes. I hate to say it but I find myself tired of songs that are going to be on the full-length because I just keep on writing songs that i am more and more happy with, finding a better representation of what I think Marietta songs should sound like.
Why did you decide to release a split with Modern Baseball over other bands?
The dudes in Modern Baseball approached us about releasing a split because they were friends with Ben and digged our music. No one else had approached us, and we wanted to put out more songs so it seemed to be the right move. And beyond that, they are awesome musicians and I think the duality of their style of emotional music with ours made for a real cool split.
You've recently recorded a live set and put it up on the bandcamp. Who's idea was this and why did you think it would be a cool thing to do?
We played a show at a venue in West Philly called Sprinkle Kingdom, and it was actually the first show the house was having after over a year of not having shows. So i guess for that reason and also because the dudes who live there are music recording industry majors we ended up getting recorded. I'm definitely happy with how it came out, we're not too sloppy and the quality is pretty good.
So, you guys are from Philly. Right? How is your scene there? Is there more than one scene?
Yup. Phillay. Philly's scene rules. A couple of months ago I read that there are like over 30 active house venues (could be wrong about that) in the city right now. There's practically a show every night. And the best part is that everybody who's into the scene is real into the scene. Getting out to all the shows and showing support through buying merch and stuff. And the scene certainly isn't just emo. It ranges from hardcore to progressive to punk, so it's definitely got something for everyone.
When you write lyrics, what are the subjects you seem to go back to and write about again and again?
For me, I find myself writing about little situations and scenes I remember, or barely remember. Or I’ll just write some cryptic bullshit that no one can understand but me so that no one makes fun of me. I also find myself writing about driving in cars a lot.
You've got a full length coming soon, I've heard. Would you like to fill us in on that? Names/Label ect.
Yeah, we have finished tracking drums and bass for the full-length, still need to finish up guitars/vocals/the works. Most of the songs were written over this past summer and the fall. We have no idea what we're calling it yet. We also don't know how we're putting it out yet, but we definitely want to get it on vinyl.
Do you have an tours coming up this year? Maybe saving your money to come to the UK?... hint hint...
Ha-ha, ooph. Getting to the UK would rule, but that doesn't look like it will be anytime soon. We're broke as hell. We do want to do a few weekend tours within the next couple of months and hopefully a longer tour in the summer with some cool band, like Girl Scouts... or Nicknames.. or some other cute emo kids.
Are there any bands/labels/releases ect you'd like to plug for people reading this?
Check out Tawny Peaks, Nicknames, Modern Baseball, Sovereignties, Square of Opposition Records, Lame-O Records, and Gold Soundz Records.
Ok. Last question. If you could play with 4 bands in 4 different places. Who, Where and Why?
Damn... Nirvana in Seattle, for obvious reasons, Brand New in my bedroom because Jesse Lacey, Snowing in 2010 because they were still around then and Fugazi in Europe because I saw a video of them playing there and it looked cool.
Thanks so much man. I wish you all the best in your future endevours. x
