Work bakeoff for Threatened Species Day (Sep 7th). This is the third Threatened Species Bakeoff run by @tscommissioner Dr. Sally Box, designed to raise awareness of Australia's threatened species. Here is the head and rostrum (the "saw") of a largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis). Budget and time constraints prevented a full body cake 😝 Why pick charismatic megafauna when you can pick a ray with a weapon for a face? Despite their fierce appearance, all members of the sawfish family Pristidae are IUCN listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered, with major threatening processes being climate change, habitat loss, and fishing (inc. for shark fin soup, and for their rostrums). Distribution is limited to estuaries of Northern Australia, the Indo-Pacific, and Florida. Cake and biscuit rostrum is completely vegan 🎉 Fun fact: one time I was watching River Monsters with my dad featuring sawfish, and casually let slip that my work at the time sometimes did targeted surveys for these species. The look on his face was pretty priceless 😂 #tsbakeoff #pristis #sawfish #vegan https://www.instagram.com/p/B1m0P5_jpuq/?igshid=13w9eqo9qytlw
