I think that article meant a movie about TOS characters during academy days, not Star Trek: Academy™ (which I believe wasn’t published until the 00s, but I could be wrong there).

But Shatner’s probably partially responsible for fanon Kirk anyway because he always just kind of went with the flow in terms of fan expectation, whereas Nimoy held firmer ground in terms of who Spock was/was not.
