this is just a sketch it's gonna be acrylic. it's been so long since i drew a dragon but they were the first things i ever drew
I got offered a publishing deal
... and I turned it down. This was with a small, but highly reputable, local press in my home state. They have a few successful authors on deck, and I don't doubt that, had it been right for my book, I would have done well with them.
But there's the caveat: it wasn't right for my book.
The book in question is The Slight of Tenebris, a coming-of-age fantasy about two estranged siblings--one, a dragon-slayer, the other a dragon in disguise--who have to reconcile before they end up killing each other. It's got man-eating fairies, a jaded mentor (think Geralt of Rivia if he were Black and trans), nuclear-level mommy issues, class warfare, and takes place in a world inspired by Irish-Appalachian fusion.
But it's also a Young Adult book, and the press that offered me the deal doesn't publish YA. They wanted me to age up the main character, Aerys, from 15 to 19. I wouldn't need to change anything else, they said.
So why did I turn them down? Because simply aging up a character does not change a story from YA to Adult. The lines between YA and A are often fuzzy, but it's generally understood that if a story's main focus is coming-of-age or finding identity, and the protagonist is a teenager, it's YA.
Publishing TSOT with this press as an Adult novel might have gotten my book in print sooner, but it would have also assured it wasn't marketed to the right audience. Don't get me wrong--I think it could be a book for everyone, and a lot of adults do read YA, but I had to trust my gut (and the multitude of industry professionals whose advice I asked for) and do what I thought was best for this particular story.
So I guess this is a post for anyone else out there who's eager to get published. Maybe you've been in the query trenches for a long time or you just want to get eyeballs on your work as soon as possible. And if speediness is your priority, go crazy. But don't be afraid to be patient. If it's the mainstream publishing industry, you only get one debut.
Is it a tragedy to change etc
Userboxes because I got excited for tomorrow
