Ingmar Bergman has 14 films among the TSDPT 1,000 Greatest Films, one behind the leaders Luis Bunuel and Jean-Luc Godard with 15 apiece. Ingmar's entries are Persona (ranked number 19, 1966), Fanny and Alexander (53, 1982), Wild Strawberries (61, 1957), The Seventh Seal (73, 1957), Cries and Whispers (150, 1972), Scenes from a Marriage (457, 1973), Hour of the Wolf (483 1968), Winter Light (508, 1962), The Silence (654, 1963), The Virgin Spring (664, 1960), and not pictured Smiles of a Summer Night (711, 1955), Sawdust and Tinsel (845, 1963), Saraband (913, 2003) and Summer with Monika (929, 1953)

Luis' top 10 films are Viridiana (ranked number 66, 1961), Los Olvidados (133, 1950), L'Age d'Or (136, 1930), Un Chien Andalou (141, 1928), The Exterminating Angel (156, 1962), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise (165, 1972), Belle de Jour (201, 1967), Land Without Bread (aka Las Hurdes, 385, 1932), Tristana (400, 1970), and El (405, 1953).

TSPDT Top 1,000 Greatest Films

The TSPDT did not publish an updated list in 2022 but 2023 saw the greatest number of new entries to their almost annual list. There were 52 new entries, but few of them can be called entertainment. Most all of them are political statements, politically correct documentaries, often by women, black men, and gays. Production values are close to nonexistent. Most are very low budget.

The 2024 list included only 12 new entries, and most of them are re-entries. There is a backlash from the previous list in that most of the 2024 new entries are traditional entertainments, and not political statements. None of the new 2024 entries are by women or blacks.

The 2025 list also includes 12 new entries. Ten are returning titles, and only two make their first appearance.

Browsing through the images from the new entries, there is an almost complete absence of artistry. The newly acclaimed filmmakers are not artists. They are social justice warriors. I did not purposely reject any well composed images. None were found. The images often seem amateurish, leading one to question their placement among the greatest ever.

I have not seen many of these films, and their accompanying images can be repellant, but I will add my comment if I've seen the film. First, I will count down the new entries and re-entries to the 2023 edition, followed by the same for 2024, and then 2025.

John's highest ranking entries are The Searchers (ranked number 9, 1956), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (93, 1962), My Darling Clementine (132, 1946), Stagecoach (143, 1939), The Grapes of Wrath (184, 1940), The Quiet Man (222, 1952), and How Green Was My Valley (362, 1941).

John Ford's 14 entries on the TSPDT list of the 1,000 Greatest Films include Wagon Master (ranked number 598, 1950), Young Mr Lincoln (662, 1939), Fort Apache (765, 1948), Seven Women (784, 1966), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (873, 1949), The Sun Shines Bright (924, 1953), They Were Expendable (946, 1945).

13 of the 14 are among my best 1,001. The Sun Shines Bright is missing.

D. Alexander Payne

Alexander Payne and his camp seem to have a knack for casting. Sideways, Citizen Ruth, About Schmidt: all of his best films are marked by smart actors giving inimitable portrayals of gut-punchingly fucked-up people. I can't imagine anyone else other than Reese Witherspoon as the psychotically ambitious Tracy Flick. Just great casting all around.
