Group B Rachel Headcanons

This is my belated birthday present to @ourcastellan. I wanted to write some fan headcanons for Rachel, Thomas’s counterpart.

Rachel was brought in after Teresa. The girls were kept separated until they were in the early teens. This was due to WICKED wanting to observe both of them separately until they matured.

Before she was paired with Aris, WICKED planned to stage a series of tests that would put her in competition with Teresa, which she refused to do. She argued that the results would be damaging, mentally or physically to both subjects, which was unnecessary in a situation where every Immune child was needed. Techs expressed surprise over her outburst, but eventually it was approved by the current Chancellor.

Techs noted that Rachel was one of the more outspoken subjects. While she wasn’t rude or mouthy like Gally or Beth, she was not one to engage in pointless activities if there was no meaningful purpose (ex. Competitive tests). They noted that she was likely to defend anyone who was pegged as the underdog, relying on her tough persona to defend the person, and in extreme cases, resorting to fighting. Headstrong was a common word that appeared in her file.

Rachel was close to Sonya and Chuck’s counterpart. Sonya had been the one to help her out of The Box and she helped patch up Rachel after Beth beat her up in an attempt to get her to remember her name or anything else. “Is she always like this?” Rachel demanded as Sonya applied soaked rags to the areas. “For some reason, I think she went harder on you than anyone else,” Sonya admitted. “Listen, I’ll tell her that it was too much.” “Thanks...Sony, but I think I can handle her myself,” Rachel replied. “After all, one doesn’t survive in this place being scared and hiding behind some other Stick, right?”

Rachel had been one of the few to discover what Thomas did before being thrown into the Maze. She was going through the terminal when she stumbled on his last few keystrokes, which was classified information about each and every WICKED/WCKD base, lab, and warehouse in existence. Privately, she sided with him, as she had begun to have her doubts about the Maze experiments and she began creating her own plan to save the Icers. Unfortunately, WICKED/WCKD figured out what she was up to, and erased her memories before sending her into the Group B Maze.

When she and Aris were rescued from The Maze, she started to remember bits and pieces of her past, most of it triggered by seeing Jansen for the first time. Like Thomas, he pulled her aside, and pretended to play the good guy. Rachel went along with it, giving him little information and saying that she was recovering after a terrible fall in the Maze. “You’ll have to excuse me – my memory’s been a mess since the incident. I was out for days and it seemed like a blur when we were rescued,” she lied. What she didn’t realize was that Jansen saw through her lie and he made a mental note to add her to the first group of subjects to be harvested. His concern was the fact that despite working for WICKED/WCKD, she would never be convinced that they were doing the right thing.

She exhibited anxiety when Jansen called her name at dinner. Aris thought it was nerves and tried to reassure her that everything was going to be all right. She faked a smile as she stood up at the front of the room with a few other subjects that were called. Before she was led away, she sent Aris one last telepathic message: Something’s telling me that we’re only getting one part of the story. If you can get out of here, do it.

More Sonya Headcannons??

Here you are anon – so sorry for the delay! Warning: Some mention of injury and TST spoilers.

Sometimes Sonya will mess with people, especially the people who try to write her off as “a dumb blonde” (based on the film appearance). Is she offended that people automatically peg her to be less intelligent? Naturally, but she has fun messing with their heads before showing them up at something she’s good at, like ice skating the Maze walls without falling or shooting and reloading a gun properly. “You were saying?” she asks with a sickly sweet smile.

She does NOT like being touched by strangers. Especially if they try to manhandle her. She will fight like hell to get free from someone’s grasp only if it seems like she can get out and get the upper hand. (Based on Sonya struggling when WCKD invaded The Right Arm and forced her into a line with the recovered Gladers.)

Sonya would like to be one of those rebellious, break-all-the-rules types but she tends to find herself gravitating towards the rules as a bit of an anchor. She rebelled against Harriet in her first few days before discovering the grave of the counterpart to George in the Group B Maze. (George was mentioned in the short comic “My Friend George”.) Eventually she comes to see the rules as keeping the community sane and somewhat in order, but she’s not above bending a few rules to find answers or seek progress in their escape from the Maze. Unfortunately, many of the WCKD techs learned early on prior to her Maze days that she would listen and obey for the most part. If she got out of line, they would punish her, leaving her with some bruising and back to conforming to their rules.

She is stunned like the Gladers when Teresa reveals herself to be the one that ratted out the base for The Right Arm. Privately she realizes that she did see Teresa act distant at times, almost like she didn’t want to be with The Right Arm. She thought it was just paranoia after dealing with some many untrustworthy people during the Gladers’ journey but starts to see the cracks in that theory when the base is raided. (TST film)

When Minho is loaded onto The Berg, nearly unconscious, she is horrified by the sight and puts distance between herself and Teresa, ignoring the other girl’s pleas that she was just trying to help the rest of humanity find a cure. Once The Berg arrives at WCKD, the captives are separated into their own rooms. Sonya glares down the soldiers who handle her and refuses to look at Teresa. As she passes the other girl, she pointedly asks her, “You said no one would get hurt. Well last I checked, that Stick they carried onboard, he didn’t look unharmed to me. How do you want to explain that?” Before Teresa can say anything, Sonya is led to her own room and locked in for the night. (Post TST film – off screen)

Aris comes to visit her in the air vents around midnight or one in the morning. WCKD still hasn’t figured out that he’s learned to navigate them since his time there and he takes full advantage of that, wanting to check up on her and see if she’s okay. Sonya brokenly admits that she misses Harriet and is scared that they’ll never see her again. “Sony, she’s safe – she’ll go to the Safe Haven,” Aris reassures her.“I guess...that’s not so bad. I mean, given I’d rather have her happy and safe instead of stuck here like us,” Sonya concludes. (Post TST film – off screen)

“Hey Aris,” Sonya begins when he comes to visit her one night, “That Newt guy didn’t get nabbed, did he?”“No um, I think it was just the two of us and that Minho guy,” Aris recalls. Sonya nods before fiddling with the bottom of her shirt. “Good – he’d hate being back here – I know I do.” “Sony, I’ve been thinking...what if Teresa’s right,” Aris offers with an anxious look on his face. “What if...there was a way to help more people? You know, the ones that are sick.”Sonya shakes her head and makes a face. “Can we talk about something else?” (Post TST film – off screen)

Aris and Sonya brotp Headcannons??

If you haven’t read The Death Cure or seen Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, please scroll past this post. Minor spoilers below.

Prior to their Maze, Aris hardly had any friends at the WICKED facility before Rachel came. Tormented by the early condition of his parents becoming volatile, deranged, and less human, he kept to himself, suffering from bad nightmares about his parents becoming full Cranks and trying to kill him. Beth made fun of his nighttime screams and begging in his sleep, which made Sonya approach the scared boy for the first time. She asked if his parents were sick too and had to send him away and he answered yes, hoping to avoid discussing the details. Eventually he began to trust her enough that he was able to tell her and Harriet about the deteriorating state of his parents’ health and why he had frequent nightmares about them.

Fed up with Beth’s arrogant behavior, Sonya, Minho’s counterpart, and Aris decided to play a prank on her after completing some of their tests. They had a bit of help from Zart’s counterpart with making construction paper masks and they used them to scare Beth as she was coming out of the bath. She stopped bullying Aris afterwards, which Sonya considered a success.

After being stung/scratched by a Griever/Shade and coming to, Sonya is left to question whether she can trust Rachel again. Aris hangs out with her in the Medical Hut to assist the Med-Janes, and he admits that he is remembering bits and pieces of his past, saying that at one point, the adults had him convinced that he was doing the right thing for the world, which had fallen apart. He tells her that Rachel probably believed all of the information that was fed to her at one point but he’s drawing a blank as to why both of them were put into the Maze if they were assisting the techs. “Something tells me we did something so bad that it made those techs want to punish us – make us try to fend for ourselves,” Aris concluded. Sonya agreed that what he was saying made sense but added that she had trouble imagining Aris getting into trouble.

A few days after being rescued from the Maze, Sonya grows concerned when she doesn’t see Aris or Rachel. The other Keepers try to reassure her that they probably needed to run tests or in Rachel’s case, perform surgery on her broken legs. Her suspicions are confirmed when Group B is rescued from the facility by The Right Arm, as a volunteer from the organization confirms that they did not find “a blue eyed Stick with freckles on his nose and a girl with two broken legs” during their sweep. Some of the others are ready to conclude that the two are probably dead or with WCKD, while Sonya ponders if either one might be alive but under WCKD’s control. (TST film)

Relieved was an understatement when Sonya realized that Aris was traveling with the small ragtag group trying to get up the pass leading to the mountains. She was surprised to see him with this group, but nonetheless happy to know he was safe, looked to be Immune, and alive. She was quick to help get him acquainted at the base for The Right Arm and wanted to hear all the details since their group was separated. (TST film)

After completing her Phase 3 trials, Sonya is reunited with the group. She underwent some very tough trials and Aris sympathizes with her, saying that they made him question everything he thought was right. Both agree to undergo the Swipe removal process to get their memories back and recall their early friendship before the Maze, Aris trying to hide his upset face as Sonya was placed in the tank with the solution that would wipe her memories before the Maze, and other events. Both conclude that WICKED once had a good idea to save the human race by finding a cure but have gone too far with buying and harvesting Immunes. (TDC)

Sonewt movie verse Headcannons?? Sorry I keep asking for them, but I love your Headcannons so much!!!

When Group A, Aris, Brenda, and Jorge wandered into the pass leading to the hideout for The Right Arm, Sonya took charge of ordering Minho, Newt, Teresa, Frypan, Aris, and Brenda to get on their feet while Harriet kept her gun pointed at Jorge and Thomas. Both she and Harriet had been alerted to their presence by the shooters above, as well as Newt yelling, “Where the Hell did those bloody shots come from?!” She took brief notice of the boy that bore a slight resemblance to her but quickly forgot about him when she saw Aris was alive.

Because Newt sat in the passenger’s seat for Bertha, he started to head to the front seat for one of the cars owned by The Right Arm. He bypassed the one driven by Harriet and fought with Minho over who had first dibs on the passenger seat. Sonya rolled her eyes as the boys argued and snapped, “Shut it! One of you sit up front and the other take a seat in the back!” before climbing into the driver’s seat. Minho snagged the seat next to Sonya while poor Newt was forced to sit in the back. Privately, Sonya was unhappy that it was Minho sitting next to her, as he refused to shut up about sitting in the front the whole drive up.

At Mary’s orders, Sonya rounded up new clothes and food for the newcomers, passing out gloves and scarves for the group for night. She handed Newt his stuff towards the end and fingers accidentally touched. Both mumbled apologies and Sonya left to grab food, hoping her embarrassment wasn’t showing. She overheard Frypan commenting, “Looks like you Newt. Except for the accent course.”

Sonya spent most of her time catching up with Aris, asking how they escaped. He described how they got through the ventilation system, broke windows and doors, and fired rogue shots at WCKD people trying to prevent them from getting out. Occasionally she noticed that a certain blonde was looking at them from his place on the hill with the rest of his group. Sometimes she would look up that way and he’d rub the back of his neck before raising a hand in a sort of wave. “That Stick keeps looking at you,” Harriet noted. Sonya shrugged it off while Aris noted the similarities between the pair. “Yeah sure cause we used to be related or something,” Sonya muttered as she finished her food.

Sonya scrambled to pick up a gun when WCKD ambushed the camp, handing off various weapons to the Gladers to protect themselves. She took a position in the front while Newt stayed behind where Vince was trying to load a larger gun with multiple rounds of ammo.

Newt was trying to remain calm when the soldiers started lining them up, making them kneel in straight lines for check in and counting. He bit his tongue when he saw Sonya struggling against the rough hands of one WCKD soldier, who shoved her down, pushed her head down, and scanned her as B4 before letting go. She didn’t look hurt but she looked angry about being handled like cargo.

In the mess after Thomas threatened to detonate the handheld grenade, Newt scrambled to fend off WCKD soldiers while avoiding capture. He caught a glimpse of Sonya and Aris being led into the Berg by soldiers, channeling his emotions into defending the remains of The Right Arm base as Harriet screamed their names.
