TSUBAMAKI 37?

37. “Wanna dance?”

An evening out at a formal party was something that Maki disliked about her life. Since she was part of a well known medical family, they were often invited to go to these formal parties whether they were someone’s birthday, wedding, or any type of celebration.

Despite her usual protests, she always ended up having to go to these parties much like tonight. So here she was at a large gathering hall, sitting with her mother at a table to the side. In the middle of the hall were numerous men and women conversing and greeting each other.

She could spot her father in the distance being friendly with his peers while her mother responded to anyone that came to visit her. Seeing as they were a well known medical family, many of the party’s guests were either familiar or regular patients of her parents.

“Maki? Why don’t you go and dance a little?” her mother suggested.

Maki silently shook her head and stared into the crowd. Even though she loved to dance and sing with her friends, she disliked having to do these types of dances. They were too formal and too different from the dancing she did.

“Excuse me, Miss Nishikino, may I have a dance?” a young gentleman said with a bow.

Maki pulled herself back on instinct and held up her arms, “No thank you, I’m not looking for a dance tonight.”

The boy bowed once more and bid her farewell, he must have been another one of many that asked for Maki’s hand to dance tonight. She was tired of it, she just wanted to return home and relax to herself.

“Oh, if it isn’t Nishikino Maki of u’s!” a light voice announced.

Maki turned around to see a familiar face, “Tsubasa?”

“Hey, it’s been awhile!” the brunette sat down next to Maki and smiled, “How have you been? I’m assuming that you all went your own way after our Sunny Day Song performance.”

Maki shrugged and smiled gently, “u’s is never over, what we did together will always be remembered and remain in our hearts as well as the people who supported us.”

“That’s deep…” Tsubasa muttered.

Maki shook her head and smiled, “Anyways, how are you and A-RISE doing?”

“Oh? You haven’t heard? We’re about to debut our first album pretty soon!” Tsubasa said happily.

“Congratulations,” Maki said with a smile.

Tsubasa returned the smile with her own, “Hey, wanna dance?”

“E-Eh?” Maki pushed herself back a few centimeters in surprise, “I-I’m not good at dancing like this.”

“Don’t worry, I do these kinds of dances all the time since I’m forced to go to these parties,” she stood up and overed Maki her hand, “Come on, I’ll lead us.”

Maki reached her hand out nervously before it was grabbed immediately by Tsubasa. She let out a yelp from the sudden pull but she managed to keep her balance and follow the brunette to the dance floor.

“Alright, just leave your hand here…” Tsubasa guided Maki’s right hand and placed it on her shoulder, “And we just hold our hands here!” she gripped Maki’s left hand gently and placed her free hand on Maki’s waist.

“The most common dance done at these parties are the waltz. It’s a simple yet elegant dance that involves six repeating steps,” Tsubasa instructed. Maki nodded along and followed her lead.

Tsubasa extended her left foot forward, swung her right foot close to her left before extending it out, and then pulled her left foot next to her right, “These are the first three steps, your’s are obviously mirrored since we’re facing different directions.”

Maki nodded and followed as best as she could, “The next three steps are just the first three but mirrored, with the exception of a slight turn,” Maki nodded and Tsubasa guided her through a mirrored step pattern while changing their position 90 degrees, “See? Easy, right?”

Maki nodded, “Let’s keep going until I get the hang of it…”

Tsubasa giggled, “Sure thing.”

The two practiced waltzing until Maki was able to get the hang of it, eventually progressing into more advanced steps Before they realized it, many eyes were on them as they kept in sync with their dancing, “E-Everyone’s staring…” Maki whispered.

“Hey you’re a former school idol, you should be used to being watched while dancing,” Tsubasa whispered back.

“Okay but this is different, I’m not with everyone else…” Maki replied.

Tsubasa gave a small sigh before looking at Maki with a gentle expression, “I’ll give us a flashy ending then.”

As the music neared it’s end, Tsubasa sped up the pace and just before the final note, she sent Maki into a small spin which ended with the both of them bowing to the crowd. They replied with light applause and the two made their way back to Maki’s table, “Did you have fun?” her mother asked.

Maki nodded and looked at Tsubasa, “Thank you for teaching me,” she said with a bow, “You said you come to these kinds of parties often, right?”

Tsubasa nodded and smiled, “Yeah, most of the time anyways.”

“If we manage to see each other at another party, do you think we could waltz again?” Maki asked shyly.

Tsubasa seemed to have been caught off guard based on the blush that covered her cheeks, “W-Well… If you’re fine with having a dance partner like me.”

Maki looked down at her feet and smiled, “I don’t mind.”
