you should drop the mice and mice sized people movie list/recommendations!!
oh god okay. there are many and this list is non-exhaustive and not in any order, it's just the ones i remember watching and what i felt about them. but first we're going to establish a definition: a mouse movie is any movie about little people that live beneath a larger human world or otherwise interact with items of a larger scale. often those little people are literally mice, but not always.
secret of nimh: classic, beloved, can't go wrong. the quintessential mouse movie. what's there to say. you've probably already seen it.
an american tail: i never saw it all the way through as a kid, and when i watched it as an adult i was shocked at how much this one wasn't good. everybody seems to love an american tail but it isn't good? it isn't good. i didn't watch fievel goes west, maybe that one's better.
the rescuers: classic. don't think too much about the logistics of it all, just enjoy how they use combs as ladders. madam medusa is such a fun villain to look at.
the rescuers down under: unbelievably gorgeous animation, a great terrifying villain. everybody loves the james baxter eagle but i actually want you to watch this clip and the great character animation of the villain. honestly i mostly like this one for the craft of it, i don't feel strongly about it as a Mouse Movie.
the great mouse detective:
flushed away: can you believe this is actually one of my favorites. i was totally disinterested in it as a kid because it pissed me off aardman was doing 3d instead of claymation but watching it as an adult i was like wait. this is actually pretty good. one of the big reasons i got into mouse movies was that i was interested in the prop design, ie what human items they use for their everyday purposes. flushed away was GREAT for this, they made fantastic use of human items in the mouse world without copping out and just making small versions of human things.
chicken run: while it's not about mice, it qualifies by the definition of little people using big people items, and that's what i like about this category of film. also there are little rat salesmen who wear little suits so it counts. anyway chicken run is great. i never watched the sequel they made years later.
fantastic mr fox: same justification, they're little people and they live under the larger human world. i liked this one! it's very charming. it's wes anderson so either you like wes anderson or you don't and i do actually like wes anderson.
the borrower arrietty: it's ghibli so you've all probably already seen it. it's fine! i've only watched the dub and the first time it was fine, but the second time it's really hard to get around how bad the boy's voice acting is. so maybe watch the sub. it's good for the purpose of little people prop design, but it's honestly one of ghibli's kinda mid productions.
thumbelina: i am so fond of this film. it's a classic don bluth mess. the songs are infuriatingly catchy. they got the voice actress for ariel to play another red-headed ingenue with a beautiful voice everyone wants and the story is Just her getting passed from villain to villain who all want to exploit her while she waits for a fairy prince to rescue her. gilbert gottfried plays a singing beetle. carol channing plays a shrew who sings a song about how you should marry for money. i love this stupid movie. please watch it.
ratatouille: honestly i don't count ratatouille. the only time they use human items is during the escape sequence and they don't even wear little clothes. the little clothes are so important.
i might be forgetting some but these are the ones i can think of off the top of my head. you would think i had a macro/micro thing but genuinely, i was just into the prop design and the worldbuilding of little people living under our feet. that's how you get an applecore.
e: i forgot hakumei to mikochi!! fantastic little anime series about (i think?) little fairy people living in a to-scale world with animals. i love it. it's a mix of to-size props and dealing with scale, since all the animals and insects etc are intelligent but still need to fit in the world. highly recommended.
