Hey orthopedic side of vetblr!
If you're out there. What's your opinion on the meniscal release in a TTA surgery? I had the opportunity to watch one today and the vet performing the surgery mentioned that cutting the meniscus is fairly controversial so I wanted to hear both sides.
Vet Clinic: TTA surgery
I had the opportunity to help set up pre op and watch a TTA surgery and it was super cool. I didn't pass out at the sight of blood (yay!) like I thought I would and I learned a lot. Orthopedics is one area I was considering looking into and while it's super confusing and makes no sense to me right now some of the stuff Dr. S was explaining to me clicked and actually started to make sense.
Boe had his 6 week progress x-rays for his TTA surgery and the vet said everything looked like it was healing nicely! I've been super worried about it but Boe has started to put more weight on his right recently so my hope that things would look good got a bit higher. He just told me to start doing more things with him slowly to build muscles in that leg. Specifics were: swimming, zigzags to push off on that leg, up and down inclines and some sit to stands. So you're basic rehab exercises. I'm going to take a look at a couple of rehab places in my area though. I'd rather a professional do this because I don't want to push him too hard too fast. And we got a free nail trim as a bonus to the good news! Damn dog will let literally everyone else in this world touch his feet except me lol Also I am not a huge fan of his surgeon but we did have a neat conversation about pitbulls and how their structure and conformation is such a huge factor in why they tear their ACL's so often. And how its usually them and yellow labs (go figure) that he operates on. And how they're both high at risk of tearing their other ACL. Still hate him though.
Update: Boe's staples have been removed and he is now cone free under supervision! I finally talked to the surgeon about how he's still not putting weight on his leg and he wants to wait and see if it gets better because other wise they'll have to go back in with a scope and see if its an underlying infection or actual damage. I'm hoping it does get better on its own because I definitely cannot afford another scoping.
Meant to give an update earlier but I fell asleep 😂 My brother and I got Boe home safe and sound this morning during a surprise flash flood. Unfortunately we didn't take into account of the ridiculously huge comfy cone he has to wear so putting him in his crate is not an option since he catches it on the corners. Fortunately I have an exercise pen that I've been holding for my friend whose dog passrd away in an accident in november. So I called the vet and made sure it was acceptable to put him in that and then we got him settled. Now I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to get him in the car and to the vet by myself on Monday for his C2 laser treatment. It was hard enough even with my brother there getting him home. My poor furbaby is so sad and confused and miserable 😢
Just got a call from the surgeon. He said the TTA procedure went great however he did find a tear in the meniscus so I'll have to keep an eye on that in case it tears in the future. But I'm so glad my furbaby is on the road to getting better and being able to be a dog again. Its been a hard 5 months for the both of us. Next stop besides recovery from surgery is getting his food allergies under control.
