i think the songs on the album will be utterly earnest and personal, but it is so interesting that she's juxtaposing the supposed authenticity of the "tortured poet" (the idea that to be artistic you must be dark, tortured, etc and your work must reflect that in a specific way, or you're not considered a real artist, maybe even a sellout, a shill) with "department," a concept that implies administration or detachment, a mere method of organization. as if the act of creating "tortured art" has been catalogued, maybe even commodified or turned routine. like, even the way she presents her art, her truth, as "evidence"... the way her songs about her life are organized and labeled as "artifacts," even though they are intimate and personal. there's just a few layers of irony here that i'm really excited for, and that addresses so much of discourse around her artistry, life, and mythology.
The Albatross.
Something about being a self reflective person and knowing that you have a tendency of running from relationships and then convincing yourself that self growth would be staying and working through it by examining everything as if you’re the one causing problems but it resulting in you missing the real cues that it’s time to go
the fuck of it all is he wouldn’t let her be sad (re: am i allowed to cry?) and he would let her help him not be sad either (re:renegade). like everything she’s feeling within herself is “wrong” and everything she’s trying to do to help you is “wrong” … like pick a side! don’t be shitty! realize that your actions hurt your partner!
Now if we think "but daddy I love him" is actually a reference to The Little Mermaid, I do think this song is about finding her voice. No I don't think it's gonna be a song about trying to convince her daddy that she loves her man lol. I mean it still could be, I just get the sense this entire album is album reclaiming herself so I think this is going to be about reclaiming her role as a diaristic songwriter.
