Transform + Translate presentation / Feedback / Reflection

During my presentation, I guided the audience through the study of cymatics, showcased the journey of my experiments and the evolution of my concept.

Feedback:

my tutors suggested that I highlight my narrative more and clearly explain why family's laughter ended up being put on placemats.

considering where I can take it next would be my next move if I was considering this for my major project.

is there a way to highlight the differences in the patterns more, as currently the crosses stand out the most.

Reflection:

To enhance the visibility of the differences in the patterns, I could experiment with adjusting the parameters of my Chladni plate. I could also try varying the frequencies or amplitudes of the sound vibrations to produce more distinct patterns for each family member's laughter. Additionally, considering the incorporation of different visual elements or colours to differentiate between the patterns more effectively would be a good solution. Finally, exploring alternative formats or mediums could provide new opportunities to showcase the uniqueness of each pattern.

Personalised placemats

I believe that creating personalised placemats would be an ideal format for this project. Each family member would have a unique design, highlighting the individuality within the family unit. Additionally, it would serve as a meaningful reminder of the joy shared during family gatherings, where laughter and storytelling prevail.

Audio responsive Chladni plate

Here is a dynamic interpretation of the static patterns observed on my digital Chladni plate. Despite the faint lines resulting from the laughter's fluctuating frequencies, the composition maintains a captivating sense of motion, avoiding stillness. While documenting this phenomenon posed challenges, I am very pleased with the experimental outcomes and thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Fixing the program / Touchdesigner

Before I began physical experiments, I had a last look at the file in Touchdesigner, tried placing my sound in multiple links and attaching it to various chops/tops, and eventually, I figured out how to use it, so it began creating patterns in response to my audios.

Plan B ideas

As I was struggling to figure out how to fix the code I had created, I decided to come up with physical alternatives for sound visualisation.

placing a sheet of paper with coloured water blobs to let it draw marks, then trace it in illustrator to create a sand-like visual. I could use these for a little 'photo' book

I came across an artist named Barbe while exploring Chladni pattern generators. His Instagram profile showcases intricate audio-reactive programs, which are both complex and fascinating. His artworks show endless possibilities within Touchdesigner.

Barbe also delves into coding for robotic pens, employing them to craft physical artworks. I enjoy the cleanness and mathematical precision of the shapes and lines, which sometimes is lacking in artworks produced by hand. I think this field is a great chance to merge technology with human conceptual ideas.

As I navigate Touchdesigner, I find immense potential and look forward to delving deeper into this field in the future.

Sonically generated images - Nika Blasser

In my quest for inspiration, I explored artists working with sound and stumbled upon the captivating artworks by Nina Blaster. Her fascination with merging nature's forces with the human touch led to an installation that generated various frequencies. These turned into intricate shapes in the responding dust. This project sparked my interest in exploring additional materials for sound representation, contemplating the use of charcoal or paint on a vibrational surface to craft expressive art.

Speaking to a professional

As I was stuck with the code I wrote, I noticed that the creator is very active in the comment section, so I decided to contact him. He replied to me very quickly, and explained that his code wasn't adaptable to every audio and that I had to alter it to work with my sound. Obviously, my programming abilities aren't at this level yet, so I had to search for more solutions and figure out more methods for visual sound representation.
