The little girls head craned up at the massive two story building in front of her, backing up a few steps as she tilted too far back but caught herself before falling over.
"Careful, Iris," Her mother's voice warned from her side - she wouldn't have fallen, her mama would have caught her - "if you want to look that far back be sure to put a foot behind you so you can balance."
"Balance." Iris looked down at her feet, looking to her mother to copy her movements. They moved over to the side so she could explain herself.
She smiled after explaining and they stepped back onto the main path and entered the library. It was a cloudy afternoon, and she'd been meaning to introduce Iris to the library anyway. What better time than when the library was doing a lego acticity for kids.
Two birds one stone, she could get some research and homework done, and Iris can be around kids her own age. Iris was looking at absolutely everything, it was everything Bugsly - her brownie friend at home - had told her about, there were so many books, everything was so tall-
Void
A voice whispered in her ear, she turned to look at who her mother was speaking to and it was as if the light got dimmer around him. His bright green - too green, reminds her of Bugsly's wings, but the wrong color too, should be brown a brown bird twitters in the tree, the sun catches its orange chest - eyes watched her mother, then looked down to her. Iris held her mothers hand and leaned in closer to her.
"Why hello there!" The man leaned over the desk. "Are you looking for a library card?"
She was silent a moment, the man behind the counter appeared as patient as her mother and let her think. Her mother always said to make an informed decision, she wasnt sure what library card was
"Whats a library card?"
"Its a card that lets you check out books to take home."
"I can take books home?" Iris's jaw physically dropped open, her grip on her mothers hand loosened as he explained how you used a card. She looked up at her mother.
"Would you like one?"
"Yes, please!"
"What a well behaved daughter you have." He commented, pulling out a plastic card and a sheet of paper.
"I wanna sign it."
"But, Iris-"
"I want to, its my card, I should do it."
"Excuse us for a moment, can we take this?"
"Of course, there are some tables right over there to use."
"Thank you." She smiled to him, taking the piece of paper."
"Mama, I want to do it,"
"Yes Iris, and you will, we just needed to get out of the way, see?" She nodded back to the desk once they had sat down and saw that a line had formed behind them.
Her mother placed the paper and a pencil down, walking Iris through the process of filling out the information, which turned out to reminding her the correct spelling for their home address.
Void
The voices whispered again and Iris looked up to see the man staring at them. "Mama, what's a void?"
"Hm?" She looked up from the paper to Iris. "A void is... A completely empty space."
"Completely?"
"Completely. Why do you ask?"
"He reminds me of one."
"The librarian?" Her mother looked over to him, he was now talking with another person - employee? and stepping out from behind the counter.
"Are voids old?" Iris continued.
"Excuse me?"
"He feels old." The librarian in question had been approaching them and had apparently heard that bit of the conversation, her mother noticed his apparent awkwardness and gave an apologetic smile.
"Iris, you shouldn't comment on people's age, its rude."
"Why?"
"Most people dont like being reminded of their age, imagine if you were older, how would you like someone you ger than you calling you old.
"Oh..."
"No, it's quite alright," He said, standing at the edge of the table now. "Children are children."
"Fair point." Her mother gave him another smile.
"I am curious though," he continued. "How old do you think I am?"
"Ancient." She said it so quickly and with so much confidence her mother just shook her head with a smile.
"How old is ancient, can you count that high?"
"25. Ancient." She nodded again, "My names Iris, like the flower!" She beamed up to him.
"Robin."
Iris scrunched up her face, the name felt off. She couldn't explain why.
"I'm Angeline, her mother said in her silence. "Here, or are you on break or something? I'll get back in line in that case."
"No, no, it's quite alright, I was coming over to check on you both, anyway." He took the paper from her, leading them back yo the main desk.
"So, are you here today for the lego activity?"
"Yes!" Iris nodded enthusiastically. "I'm the first in my class to finish my reading so Mama said she'd take me as a celebration!"
"Oh, how wonderful," Robin filed the paper away and returned with the plastic card. "All you have to do is sign the back and you can use it immediately."
"Like today?"
"Yes,"
Iris beamed again, looking around at the nearby books.
"What are you here for, then?" His attention turned to Angeline, whos eyes never strayed from her daughter.
"I need to get some homework done," She admitted. "I have a research project due on Nietzsche so I was going to see what I can find to try and narrow down a topic." Angeline did not see how his eyes lit up.
"Well then, lets get Iris intoduced and settled and I can try to help you."
"Oh I couldn't," Angeline finally turned her gaze to meet his, "You're busy up front."
"It's fine~" He waved. They'll be okay."
The others were starting to wander off anyway, doing their own things.
"I mean..." She sighed. "Help would be nice, I don't particularly like Nietzsche so having two pairs of eyes would be good."
"Very much so."
"Iris," Angeline said in a slightly more raised voice, her daughter cam trotting back up with a large child's book in her hands.
"I want this one."
"We can check out after the activity, okay?"
"Okay!" Iris smiled again, heading off to the kids section, Angeline ad Robin following.
"She's adorable," Robin said once they got her squared away with the other kids.
"Thank you, I tried."
"You're succeeding." He nodded. "Is your... husband busy?" She didn't notice him pointedly not looking to her when he asked this as they went upstairs to the reference material.
"No, no husband." She did see, however, how quickly his head turned to her. "Boyfriend?"
She shook her head.
"You're raising Iris on your own?"
"My parents help when they can."
"And you're going to school."
"Life doesn't stop just because you get pregnant, right?" She laughed it off. "Besides, Iris is special," Robin nodded along with that. "All in all she could have been a lot worse, she could have taken more after her father." she shook her head with a rueful grin. "Now that would have been a handful."
"Still, you're doing a great job with her."
"Thank you." Angeline said, smiling to him. Her eyes went back to the stacks, letting Robin lead her to the philosophers.
She didn't norice how he looked at her, how quiet the space around them had gotten, how no one appeared to bother them in the stacks.
She eventually settled on a topic, books lined up and ready to he checked out as well as some sites and articles emailed to herself with his assistance.
"I couldn't have done this without you,"
"Oh I'm sure you could have, you already basically knew what you wanted so it was just a matter of finding it."
"Still, you made this so much easier and fun."
"Well I live to be of service."
Angeline couldn't stop the small giggle from escaping. Robin was... Charming. Weird Void thing aside with Iris she was rather taken with him.
"So, this... May be a bit presumptuous." She started, "And fast, I suppose, but. Would uou consider. Maybe, meeting for a cof-"
" Yes." His answer came before she'd even finished the question, he blushed and laughed quietly. "Sorry, I interrupted you, I was just. Yes. I would like to."
Angeline nodded, she couldn't stop her smile even if she wanted to.
"Here then," she reached over to her notebook and tore anpiece of paper out, writing her number down. "Text me when you're off and we can schedule something."
He took the piece of paper carefully, tucking it away in his vest pocket. Angeline turned to pick up the stack of books, missing how he put his hand to his chest, feeling how hard his heart is beating.
The two of them went back downstairs, the noise returning and the people making appearances again. They found Iris still with the lego set, next to a strange brown and orange blob.
"What are you making?" Angeline sat next to Iris, setting her things down as Robin stood behind them. He nodded to the employee overseeing the kids.
"A Robin." Iris said, matter of factly. She added a few extra bits to it to make legs.
"Oh, I didn't know you knew what a robin looked like." Angeline smiled to her daughter. "I thought they were blue..."
"Mama," Iris groaned. "You're mixing up robins and bluejays again!"
"Right," Angeline nodded, taking Iris's complaint as a serious matter. "My apologies."
"Buglsey told e what they look like."
"Oh did they? I didn't realize they came along with us."
"Bugsley wanted to see the books. And they told me what robins looked like."
"I see,"
"Bugsley?" Robin's voice came from behind them. Before Angeline could answer Iris stood up.
"Bugsley's a brownie, they're my friend!"
"Ah..." Robin looked toward Angeline for some guidance.
"Are you finished?"
"Yes." Iris said, picking her book up from the spot on the floor it rested on.
"Lets check out then," Angeline stood up, holding her hand out for Iris, who clutched the book to her chest and left with her.
Robin followed shortly, his bright green eyes on the lego blob for a moment longer.
The teo of them check out, Iris using hr new library card and agreeing let Angeline carey it in her purse for convenience. They waved to Robin good bye, Angeline making eye contact with him a little longer than necessary before leaving with Iris.
She didn't see Robin take the number from his pocket and put into his phone. She didnt see him rub the material between hisnfingers, how he opened his cabinet to find their library card info to look at and memorize the address listed in the child's handwriting.
That she was raising a child like that all on her own... He shook his head. He knows he can love her as she needs, that he'll be a good father... He just needs a chance.
He waited an hour before texting, claiming it legitimately was the end of his shift and offering a cafe lunch. He just needs a chance
I have planned for drawing my character for this, but the procrastination hits and picrew is my friend once again hahahaha. I'll draw her properly in the future, I promise!
Robin Adler belongs to @turnthepagevn! There's no demo yet, but we have the ship meme and I have to do it! (❁´◡`❁)
Kamille is very gentle and easy-going. Can be assertive but likes someone else taking the reins but will reject if she doesn't like the situation. Will tell you when she doesn't like it.
With those wings replaced her ears and the light halo (Huh, is it some kind of effect? One unsuspecting person may ask), some might wonder if she's a celestial who knows. Younger looking than her age, but many thought that she's much older than that.
Despite the delicate features, she has connections from the upper and under worlds and also can knock you out bare-handed. Stronger than she looks.
She met a cute librarian at the library where she tried to go in her free time. She found that she went there more often these days and wondered why. Why indeed?
