Lincoln Myers served as Minister of the Environment & National Service in the NAR government between 1986 and 1991, having won the consituency of St Ann's East from incumbent PNM Prime Minister George Chambers. Myers began his 40-day fast outside the Hall of Justice in 1985 after the Public Accounts Enterprises Committee, of which he was a member, sought to excuse a state-owned company, PLIPDECO, from a requirement to explain $28,000 of apparent fraud because the sum was “too small.” The stand against corruption drew a growing crowd and is believed to be one of the reasons for the crushing defeat of the PNM in the 1986 election, which the NAR won 33 seats to three. We only had one professional encounter, after economist Lloyd Best rather bravely left the future of the TAPIA newspaper, the T&T Review, in my hands as editor with Lincoln Myers as manager of the operation. My ambitions for the paper were, on reflection, misplaced. The Review had a shelf-life of one month between publications, so I decided to get it on store shelves, first in book stores, as a magazine produced on newsprint. My own enthusiasm then was for bold, lengthy lifestyle stories and I did two, one with classmate and international footballer Richard Chinapoo and the other with Peter Minshall featured on the new “cover.” I folded the back of the paper in half to create a front and back for the tabloid publication, making it a size that would fit on magazine racks. The experiment and my own youthful restlessness and unwillingness to sit down in an office all day long soon put paid to any notion that Myers and I would be able to work together. I left the post, the Review reverted to cover to cover scholarship and Myers and I would never speak again. When I did this photo early in his fast, there was no need, since he did not speak during his vigil.
