A/N: final bit of writing for Tuactober 2020! And we’re ending a light-hearted one!
Tuactober 2020 Day 29: Family BBQ
prompts by @totallyevan
The Hargreeves weren’t the type of family who did everything together.
They certainly weren’t the type of family to have a family BBQ.
Which, in no way, explained why they were in Y/N’s back garden having one.
“You're burning them.”
“I’m not burning them, I’m cooking them.”
“They’re literally burning, I can see them burning.”
“Luther, do you want to do this?” Diego snapped, turning to glare at his brother, brandishing the tongs at him threateningly.
“If you’re going to keep burning the sausages, then yes,” Luther snapped back.
“Boys, behave,” Allison called, sighing loudly. She was buttering some bread rolls and was getting more and more heavy handed with the spread the longer Diego and Luther went on arguing.
Y/N shook her head as she chopped up some tomatoes, trying her hardest not to squirt tomato juice at Klaus who was happily making himself a cocktail.
“The grill is too hot -”
“Alright,” Diego said, pulling a knife out from somewhere and brandishing it at Luther. “I’m tired of this -”
“Diego, put the knife down and stop cremating the fucking sausages,” Y/N snapped, glaring at her brothers and pointing a knife between them. “Do not make me intervene.”
Diego and Luther both mumbled what sounded like an apology and turned back to the sausages.
Y/N sighed in despair and resumed chopping her tomatoes. She swore as the knife missed the tomato, sending the tomato flying off the chopping board and in the direction of Five. It landed on the table in front of him and he slowly turned around to look at his sister with a face of disdain.
“Sorry, Five,” Y/N called, grabbing another tomato from the back and cutting it - carefully, this time.
“Ben says that the bacon’s burning,” Klaus called, leaning back in his chair, sunglasses on, cocktail in hand.
“What bacon?” Luther asked, frowning. “Oh, shit, bacon!” He exclaimed as he ran inside the house and into the kitchen.
Y/N paused and hung her head. “I swear to god if you lot end up burning my fucking house down...”
“Guys?” Vanya called as she walked up to the gate.
“Here,” Y/N called, dropping her knife and jogging over to the gate to let her sister in. Vanya smiled at her and Y/N waved at Sissy and Harlan behind her.
“Hi, Y/N,” Sissy said, stepping forward and hugging her. “Thanks for the invite.”
“No, you’re more than welcome,” Y/N said, stepping aside to let them in. “It’s nice to see one of my siblings have a stable relationship that isn’t with a mannequin.”
“Don’t ask,” Vanya muttered as she noticed Sissy’s confused face.
“Diego! The sausages are burning!” Y/N yelled, noticing the smoke wafting off there grill.
“They’re fine - ah, fuck,” Diego muttered, stepping away from Klaus and his drink and rushing over to the burning food.
“Jesus Christ,” Y/N muttered. “Luther, please tell me my house isn’t been burnt down!”
Luther poked his head out the kitchen and gave his sister a sheepish smile. “No, no, no, not at all. You just might need a new oven tray.”
Y/N groaned loudly. She glanced behind her at Sissy and Vanya. “Is it too late to be unadopted?”
A/N: third piece of writing for Tuactober 2020! I wanted to do a little something with Luther since, in my opinion, I think he’s a very overlooked character and I actually really like Luther
Tuactober 2020 Day 23: Apology
Luther watched his sister as she smiled at the customers just leaving. She’d grown since he’d last seen her - which had only been just over a year ago.
“Next customer!” Y/N called as she organised her till, tidying up the bags.
Luther stepped forward, holding his basket tightly as he approached his sister. “Hi, Y/N.”
Y/N’s head shot up and she stared at her brother with wide eyes. “Luther...”
She didn’t know what to say.
She’d thought he was dead.
She’d thought they were all dead.
Y/N stared at Luther, the rest of the shop fading away to mere background noise in her mind.
“It’s good to see you... Luther,” Y/N eventually said, her voice quiet as she kept staring at her brother.
It wasn’t a lie.
But, nor was it the truth.
Y/N and Luther had never been close growing up - they’d always been at odds with one another and, more often than not, ended up fighting over the littlest things.
When Luther wanted to lock Vanya up, Y/N stood her ground.
And Luther knocked her out and locked her in her room, refusing to let her see Vanya.
It’d been horrible to her. He'd been even worse to Vanya.
But, here he was, standing in front of her.
And she wanted to do nothing more than slap him.
“Listen, before you say anything...” Luther sighed, trailing off slightly. “I’m sorry.”
Y/N frowned at him. She leant back against the till and nodded once to let him know she’d listen.
“I was horrible to you... and I was a really shitty brother,” Luther continued, fidgeting around. “I thought I was doing what was right... but I just made things worse and I’m sorry for what I put you through. And what I said. And what I did -”
Y/N cut him off by stepping forward, standing on her tip-toes (for her was a good five inches taller than her) and hugging him.
Luther froze, unsure of what to do with the fact his sister was hugging him. For the first time... in probably ever.
“You can hug me back, you know,” Y/N said, her voice slightly muffled.
Luther slowly wrapped his arms around her, trying to hug her gently so that he didn’t accidentally squeeze her to death or anything like that.
Y/N smiled against Luther’s chest as she felt him return the hug, albeit really hesitantly.
“Thank you,” Y/N said, letting go and looking up at her big brother. “I’m so glad I’m not the only one here.”
Luther chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “No, you’re not. Klaus started a cult, Diego got locked up in an asylum, Vanya is living on a farm and Allison is... married.”
“Oh, shit,” Y/N said. “How... how are you coping with Allison and...”
“I’m fine,” Luther said, nodding.
His face said an entirely different story.
Y/N smiled sadly at him and stood on her tip-toes (again) and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “If you need someone to listen, I’m here.”
Y/N glanced behind him as she saw a customer approaching and swore softly, running back around behind the till and putting on her fake smile. \
Luther moved to the side, dumbstruck by the kindness his sister had just shown him. He smiled to himself - the smallest, almost invisible smile.
Y/ N looked over at him as she scanned the items and winked at him, smiling.
