About 125 miles south of Moab and 20 miles north of the Arizona border is the curious landmark called Mexican Hat rising high above the west bank of the San Juan river. How it got its name is no secret as it resembles a wide-brim Sombrero sitting atop a head. The giant 60-foot-wide rock seems to defy gravity as it precariously balances on a 300-foot pedestal. When we rode the Aprilia Tuareg 660 at the international press launch in Sardinia last year, the terrain was a bit on the mild side, except for a few spots. Since then, we’ve been looking forward to getting a test unit to really see how much the new machine can take on the gnar. Finally, we got our hands on a test unit we can put through its paces and we’ve been ramping up the ruggedness of the terrain from that first ride.
