I don't really enjoy the brutality of The Evil Dead but the practical effects are so damn good and the atmosphere, lighting, pacing, and sound design are all really great. Honestly deserves the cult status. Some of the scenes just close-up on Bruce Campbell's face are still pretty riveting.
So I watched 2012's Battleship on Tubi. It's generally a by-the-numbers high production value Aliens Invade disaster flick. BUT in the last 25 minutes our heroes commandeer an old derelict WW2 era battleship and staff it with help from some old vets and play AC/DC and shit and it's like OH here's the film!
With a lot more of that, and maybe even a framing device of some kids in a basement playing a Battleship/DnD hybrid, we could have had a movie. Maybe even have parallels between the game and the kids' real lives, maybe a grandpa joins in, maybe there's in-game back-and-forth between the old vets and new soldiers and lots of mind games between humans and aliens.
I dunno I just feel this actually had a lot of potential wasted.

I'm surprised Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal isn't ever mentioned up there with the He's Literally Me white male mentally ill loner films.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension is such a delightfully absurd film. Everybody is a live action cartoon character with a silly name and ridiculous outfit. There's scifi gizmos and contraptions all over. But as cheesy as it is, there's no wink and nod to the camera. No "can you believe this?" It's all just played completely straight which makes it much more charming. Also the end credits scene. I don't know why it's there but I love it.
A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2 are free on Tubi right now if anybody is down for some more old-school John Woo Hong Kong action flicks.
Executive Decision (1996) was an easy choice when I saw it stars Jurt Russell as well as Steven Seagal, Halle Berry, and John Leguizamo and it is truly a classic, contained space mid-90s thriller. What a fun watch.
I'm a simple man; I see Kurt Russel is in a film, I watch that film.
