Why is Anne of cleves so underrated! 😾
On This Day In History . 18th January 1486 . King Henry VII married Elizabeth of York . . ◼ As the eldest daughter of Edward IV with no surviving brothers, Elizabeth of York actually had a strong claim to the throne in her own right, but she did not take the throne as queen regnant. Such a convention would not truly come to England for another 67 years with the accession of Elizabeth of York’s granddaughter, Mary I. . ◼ After procuring papal dispensation, Cardinal Bourchier, Archbishop of Canterbury, officiated at the wedding of Henry VII & Elizabeth of York on 18 January 1486, in Westminster Abbey. . ◼ The marriage unified the warring houses & gave his children a strong claim to the throne. . ◼ The unification of the houses of York & Lancaster by this marriage is symbolised by the heraldic emblem of the Tudor rose, a combination of the white rose of York & the red rose of Lancaster. . , , #OnThisDayinHistory #thisdayinhistory #TheYear1486 #HenryVIIofEngland #HenryVII #KingHenryVII #ElizabethOfYork #HouseofYork #HouseofTudor #TheTudors #History #WhiteRose #TudorRose #RedRoseofLancaster #HouseofLancaster #EnglishHistory #D18Jan #BritishMonarchy #Medieval #Medievalhistory #otd #Royalhistory #kingandqueen #KingofEngland #QueenofEngland #royalwedding #onthisday #WestminsterAbbey (at Westminster Abbey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKLicieDzw0/?igshid=1klk36mdn4krk

...May some gentler passion slide into my mind,
For I am soft and made of melting snow;
Or be more cruel, love, and so be kind.
Let me or float or sink, be high or low.
Or let me live with some more sweet content,
Or die and so forget what love ere meant.
Poem by Queen Elizabeth 1

Five Summer Reads for fans of History, Mystery, and Intrigue
Recommended by W.H. Doyle, author of Tudor Rose
The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe
Creepy, atmospheric plot with an edge-of-your-seat love story…it’s all here in this 18th century book that really gave birth to the whole Gothic romance genre. Be patient. Give yourself a second to get into Radcliff’s rhythm, and you’ll be hooked.
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Juicy medieval romance intertwined with plenty of suspense, sex and historical info. One of my top faves.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory
OK, if you’re reading my words right now, I’m almost positive you’ve already devoured this book. If not, what are you waiting for?
An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears
Mystery and history fuse as three different, unforgettable characters give their totally biased versions of the same crime—who’s telling the truth?
The Selection series by Kiera Class ( @partylikeawordstar )
I’m a huge fan of competition as a narrative tool—that, the love story, how Class keeps you rooting for even the non-America contestants, and how quickly the pages flip by—all kept me flying through these books.
If you like these tales, you’ll love Tudor Rose, W.H. Doyle’s tale of competitive intrigue set in Queen Elizabeth’s court!
