In today’s modern urban world, most people are simultaneously amused and bemused when you tell them that tularemia is a disease frequently associated with skinning rabbits, probably because not as many people go rabbit hunting as in the past, and even fewer are adept at rabbit skinning. Nonetheless, tularemia is caused by the organism Francisella tularensis. The signs and symptoms of the disease depend on how the organisms entered the body. The most common form is ulceroglandular, in which an ulcer appears at the site of bacterial entry, usually following a tick or deer fly bite, or handling an infected animal.
You can also get tularemia of the eye, oropharynx, and lungs. The pneumonic form is pretty serious and comes from breathing aerosols containing the organism.
Even if you’re not skinning rabbits, you can get tularemia from your cat, hamster, or wild rodents. Our friends at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that you avoid running your lawn mower over dead animals (remember that for the quiz!).
Francisella is a professional pathogen; one of its noteworthy strategies is to live inside macrophages that usually kill invading organisms.
There are around one dozen species of Francisella. The genus was named for Dr Edward Francis and tularemia was named for Tulare County in California.
Francisella cells are Gram negative coccobacilli (pleomorphic) that are tiny at 0.2 to 0.7 microns in size.
